AM lags in reloading/redrawing the screen.
« on: April 25, 2024, 09:07:11 pm »
Has as anyone else noticed recently that AM is very slow to recover from any action. For examples:

Open a message, read it, then use back button to return to message list - I get a blank black screen and can count to five before the message list shows up again.

Swipe to delete a message and again for a count of five, I get a blank square where the message used to be before the message list finally shuffles itself to close the gap. Same for multi-select and bulk delete. Lots of blank squares for a count of five.

Open message, just glance at it quickly, don't scroll through it, use back button to return to message list, still get a blank screen, but for maybe a count of only 2-3.

Open app, blank screen for maybe a count of three.

VERY LAGGY. Anyone have any idea what's going on or how to fix it.

NO OTHER APP, absolutely no other app on my phone acts like this. They're all quite snappy.

Samsung S20+, US model w Snapdragon 865 5G, Android 13

Same here, also loading images from the address book takes long or don't even load.

Same here with the images. Some don't show up. But on top of that it takes a lot longer to load all those new icons/avatars from senders. Looks nice and fancy but may be counter-productive if they're slowing the whole process.

Seems to me the lag in everything else showed up about the same time as those new icons. Is there a way to turn them off, or choose the old simpler style?

I disabled this new icon feature. But even with this function disabled loading is slow and laggy. Emails, address book icons, etc

I turned of all the sender images in settings and that seems to have no effect on the lag, so I turned them back on. They do look classy.

But I tried this. I opened and scrolled through a message that has been previously opened and marked as read. When I close the message using the back button I still get a blank screen, but only for a count of 1 or 2.

I then marked that message as UNread, opened it again, scrolled through it, and closed it using the back button. This time I once again got a blank screen for a count of 5-6 before the message list reappeared.

There is obviously something slowing down the process of registering changes, like marking a message as read, etc. The "engine" is not running on all cylinders or is not using all the processing power a available to it in the system.

And not that it's related to the fancy sender images, but the lag did show up about the same time as that change.

Reminds me of the old dial-up days of the World Wide Wait.

Yes I agree. I got no improvement by turning off the images - so turned them back on. But I do think all the lagging showed up with the same update that added those images.

I'd try downgrading the app to a previous version to see what happens, but the AM backup and restore is inadequate. It backs up some things but not others. For instance, I have about 18 aliases/identities from other providers with my GMail address. But AM doesn't backup identities, so they all have to be entered again manually. So for me at least, uninstalling and downgrading is not a pain-free option.

I HAVE A SOLUTION:
I QUIT
The lagging is just getting worse. No response from developers. Seems no one cares, or they don't take this forum seriously.

The thing I have always liked most about AM is the ability to customize the interface "my way". I'll miss that. But I can no longer stand the long wait to refresh the page after reading a message. The app has become very dysfunctional.

I am a full paying customer. There will be no renewal from me.

I'm impressed with K-9 and Edison Mail. I can't make them look as esthetically pleasing to the eye, but they are 100% more functional.

Hello everyone,

After conducting numerous tests on various devices, we've concluded (for now) that the "slowing" issue is likely stemming from the recently added features. The additional code has increased the complexity of the app. As a result, we've observed the following:

Please adjust the following settings:

Lower the Smart Folder time period (located in Smart Folder settings)
Avoid sorting the messages by "Subject/Sender.
Turn on Conversation combining (located in Conversation settings).
Increase the messages to cache (located in Mail, receiving settings)

Adjusting the number of "Folders" set to Sync as "Plain folder" can help optimize Aqua Mail's performance. This setting typically slows down Aqua Mail because each folder in push mode requires its own connection. By reducing the number of folders set to sync as "Plain folder," you can alleviate this issue and improve the app's speed and responsiveness.

We are dedicated to optimizing Aqua Mail further, but we need your assistance to do so. Please let us know if any of these changes are affecting how Aqua Mail behaves on your end. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve the app's performance.

I have implemented all the suggestions and have reduced the plain folder sync to just the basic minimum: inbox, drafts, sent, spam, trash, etc for each account.

None of these changes has helped in the slightest.

It seems to me that if AM is adding more and more "new features" that the app can't handle, then it's biting off more than it can chew. Maybe it should get rid of these extra features that are making a mess of the basic functionality of the app.

I have 4 accounts set up in AquaMail: GMail, MSN, FastMail, and GMX. ONLY THE GMAIL ACCOUNT LAGS. The other three sync and refresh normally, no lag at all.

That same GMail account is set up in five other apps on my phone and experiences no lag issues in any of those apps: FairEmail, Edison Mail, K-9, Outlook, and the GMail app.

Among the many suggestions that have been made, the only one that has made a dramatic difference for me - and actually removed any lag completely is: In the CONVERSATION settings, turn off the "Across folders" option. That's the one that combines your sent replies with the incoming messages.

When I turned that off, AM becomes lightning fast, no lag at all in redrawing. I had also made all the other changes suggested here and in emails from the developers in response to my bug ticket. While all those changes may have resulted in slight improvements, the lag was still present, quite often at least.

But turning off this one option to combine sent replies with incoming messages, eliminated the lag entirely. When I turn it back on, the lag returns..

It would be interesting to know if others who are experiencing this lag could eliminate it by turning off that feature.

And that's one of my favorite features, if for no other reason than it keeps ongoing conversations toward the top of the message list because including sent replies makes the conversation "current". I'd hate to lose it.

Thanks for the reply.

We are currently testing a new build with a potential fix for the performance issues. Stay tuned for updates!
