Imap not deleting on server

My wife also uses Aquamail IMAP on her phone and I'm her tech support...... Recently she developed a problem in that the messages she deletes permanently on her phone remain "marked for deletion" on the server - but not actually deleted.

I must have a setting wrong in Aquamail.

"Purge [deleted] on exit" is selected. I have rebooted and refreshed AM but the deleted messages remain on the server. So it must be some other setting I need to change but I don't know which one.

Help?

Also, "delete from server immediately" is also selected.

Just a couple of ideas of what to check.
If she deletes those messages by swiping, - check how delete is defined under "Swiping" (3-dot menu -> Settings -> Swiping). ("The account's delete option"" is probably the most convenient choice there, which is the default option.)

Also, check that under account configurations (long press on the account name), -> IMAP options -> "EXPUNGE when deleting" is still check-marked.

Marked for deletion meaning -- moved to the server Deleted folder?

Please clarify, but in general, if messages are not moved to server's Deleted:

- Please long press on the account -> options and folders -> folders

- Let it refresh

- Find the server's Deleted folder, tap its name, choose "Sync with Deleted".

If the messages are moved to Deleted but are not completed deleted from the original folder (and are instead marked with \Deleted flag, which you can see in some mail app) -- then it must be the EXPUNGE option that somehow got turned off.

Finally, the "empty deleted folder when closing the app" does not, by design, empty any server side folders.

The thinking is that for server folders, you may have moved some messages using a different mail app or web mail, say by mistake, and may need to go back and undo -- and then Aqua Mail deleting those messages would be a small disaster.
