very high bandwidth usage
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:44:43 pm »
Hello

iI am a new user to aquamail, have been using Kaiten until now. I use aquamail with imap and have set the number of email per pages and emails to be stored to 250.

when both Kaiten and   aquamail ran in the  this morning, i had to stop aquamail that had downloaded 10M of data whereas Kaiten had been downloading less than 500k. And in all that time, iI had received just 2 emails for less than 200 k. It seems like  aquamail is downloading all the messages although they are already in the phone?

could someone help? Many thanks

No, the app is not downloading all messages you already have on the phone. There is an on-device message cache.

If you changed the "messages per page" to 250, that's likely to be it -- this is how many messages the app keeps up to date when it checks mail. The default is 25, obviously 250 is ten times more traffic wise.

Using too many folders in push mode (more than 2-4), particularly with @gmail, can cause higher traffic, especially when combined with an increased "messages per page".

Many thanks for your answer.

I changed the parameters so that I download less messages. It is much better - still about two times the bandwith of Kaiten, but much more manageable.

One more tip -- if you have a lot of existing messages in unread state on the server, I recommend using web mail to mark them all read.

You can find instructions for Gmail by googling, it takes just a few clicks.

Doing that should help traffic use and increase performance of my app (I sort of know what I'm doing that K-9 does not do, it has to do with correctly adjusting unread counts for locally deleted or hidden messages...)
