Problem with new version 1221
« on: February 19, 2013, 10:19:16 pm »
Hi Kostya,

First of all, great app!!!!! At the beginning I was thinking that Gmail is "the best email client for Android", soon I discovered k9,and just recently, AquaMail.
For sure, after 2 years on android, I can say, this is the best email client for me, so thx again!!! :-)
Since I'm posting in bug section, it can't just be about bragging about this great app, I have a problem with this last version. ;-)

When I open email, if there is no attachment, it shows me just white screen (picture 1) than I must swipe on blue line like there are attachments, to see the text of the email (picture 2).
If the email has the attachment, everything is good.
So, because of this, I downgraded on previous version, but now I have a problem with screen-lock and tesla unread counter, which is stuck at fixed number of unread emails, and just doesn't change. That is strange, because previous version didn't have support for that feature, so previous version should just remove that number and show nothing, but instead it just hangs there...

Just my 2 cents ;-)

Bye, daniel

The same problem for me when using the latest version on a Samsung Galaxy y running Android 2.3.6: to view the body of a message I have to swipe from right to left across the screen, and the text then fades into view. This applies to both plain text and html messages. On my tablet though, everything is working correctly.

It is a great email app; please keep up the good work.

Yeah, forgot to mention; I'm running rooted 2.3.7 android, if there are any more info needed, I'll gladly post them. :)

I don't like much the new way of showing attachments anyway. :P
The fade-in/out gets in the way.
I think the original way was the best. Why do we need navigation arrows at the bottom when we have the header gesture?
Maybe we can put the switch in that place.

Got to admit, I agree. It's easy to miss the "Show attachment" fading out and not know there's an attachment. If you want to keep the swipe, I'd say you need to add a static symbol somewhere, e.g. a paper clip in the header area, to show the message has attachments.

I don't know if this is the same issue as Dan12345 found but I've seen cases where there is no text shown. If I swipe it shows an attachment, but I can't see what's in it as there's no app registered for it. Actually these cases so far have all been notification emails from this forum that someone has responded to one of my comments.

Looks like several different issues to me:

1 - Tesla Unread. Support added in this version. The previous version does not have any knowledge of it.

2 - The text/attachments pager fading out is something I did upon a user's request, on this very forum. I'm not aware of why it would make message text not show up, are you referring to the switching of the panels itself?

3 - The arrow buttons in the icon bar (below) are for navigating to prev/next message, which is a different function entirely.

4 - I'll subscribe to this thread for answers to see if I can reproduce the issue reported by @jmccabe.

Most importantly, what should I do about the text/attachments switcher (pager)? Should I make the fading out an optional setting?

I also need to apologize for another bug in this version: it will change fonts to a smaller scale if you bring up settings on a phone-sized device (not tablet-sized). I've got it fixed, will need to do a small update, but meanwhile -- please use the hardware volume buttons to make the fonts larger again.

For me it was exactly as described by Daniel in the original post: select a message from the message list and the body of the message appears blank, with nothing to indicate there is another panel. Also, I'm not convinced that it is that swiping takes you to another panel that displayed the text. Having done one swipe to get the text to fade in, it then seems quite sensitive to touches of the screen, which then male the text disappear again. Maybe not just related to the Android version, but also to the screen size? The screen on Samsung Galaxy y is just 240×320 pixels.

I think that adding a big line to switch to attachments is a drawback for any space constricted screen (and I have 800x480, won't want to see in a low end phone how it works).
By doing a fade-in/out you're annoying quick readers (like me) as some part of the text is hidden for a while.
My opinion is that another solutions should be found.

3 - The arrow buttons in the icon bar (below) are for navigating to prev/next message, which is a different function entirely.
I don't see the difference. You swipe right and you go to the next message, you swipe right and go to the previous one. In a similar way the arrows bellow go to next and previous messages. Is it different for other people? I used some special setting that provides that functionality?

Now, bizarrely, the topic reply notification I just got looked fine. The earlier ones claimed to have an attachment but this one didn't.

@Dan12345, @komadori: I'll check it out tomorrow, but darn, I've never seen the issue with the empty text area on any of my devices...

Would appreciate if you could try the version below, too.

@jcasares: yes, I dislike the space it takes too, but the previous way (with the paper clip icon in the icon bar) seemed to be even more confusing, and could make the prev/next buttons disappear due to not having enough room.

One other option is to make the entire message viewing screen scrollable, like the message composing screen is. I'd have to seriously think about what that would do to the attachment previews (there is a memory usage issue there).

This build: http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.2.2.5.apk

... makes the fading out optional, defaults to off like before, the new setting is under "Message display" , in Extended settings mode, as all interesting settings are.

OK, I wanted to make a video to show exactly what is happening, but I see in the meantime there was a lot of posting! :)
so, Kostya, just for you to see how it looks like, I'm posting links to the videos....the first one is the problem with tesla unread after downgrading to the previous version. I think that tesla writes that number somewhere in tesla app and just "hangs in there" and waits for it to be updated from Aqua app. It does not see that now Aqua is now old version without unread support. It doesn't help removing it (tesla widget) and placing the whole widget from the scratch.

/watch?v=PztJVj_zzAc

The second video shows the problem with "not showing email text body" in the new version, and how the problem with unread tesla counter is solved (number is updated). here is the link:

/watch?v=g-m8sfw-C3c

I'll try now this 1225 version, with choosing how to show attachemnts, and get back to you all...:)

p.s. im not allowed to post external links, so you should add wwwyoutubecom in front of the links with fullstops, ofcourse ;)

OK, just tried 1225 ver, if I have not enabled "fading" which is deafult setting in this build, I cannot see the message or the attachments. Even if I swipe, which is expected cause swipe is not enabled. :)

here is video:

/watch?v=Azn0233TP0E

If I enable "attachment fading" everything is the same as in the 1221 build; it doesn't show message at opening.

p.s. of course, tesla unread  problem is solved in this versions (1221, 1225) where it is supported feature

Thank you Dan. Appreciate the videos (btw, the links are disabled because of anti-spam until you have a few posts..... sorry about the inconvenience).

I noticed that you've got full screen mode (for message viewing) enabled. Can you try disabling that, using the "arrows" icon in the bottom left? And see if it makes a difference?

And of course -- of course! -- I'm unable to reproduce this on any of my devices..... Tried Galaxy Nexus, HTC Incredible, Sony Xperia Arc, all with 4.*, and a Samsung S5830, with 2.3.....

What is your device and its Android version?

hope it helps :)
I tried changing those views before, but haven't succeeded in anything ;) I tried in this 1225 version as well, with fading enabled and disabled...you can see:

/watch?v=sNABSuFwI04

I'm using HTC Desire rooted, 2.3.7; CM - 8.0 JG stable, MildWild build.

if I can help some more, just say so, I will gladly help in developing process of this great app! :)

p.s. Komadori is on 2.3.6, so it could be something connected to 2.3...
