Custom notification settings on Android 8
« on: December 31, 2018, 04:00:06 pm »
Hello,

I just got my new phone with Android 8 (Oreo) and I just can't find message notification settings.
On old phone (Android 7.0) with same Aqua mail version (1.18.1-1405) everything is fine - I go to settings->Message notifications and I can set Sound LED color etc.
On new phone settings are gone, there is new menu item Settings->Message Notifications->Manage notifications but I can't select custom sound and LED colors and patterns. It allows only to enable/disable ringtone.
The same menu shows when I go to phone settings->manage notifications.

I want different sound for emails and other notifications where I can find this setting now, and where are LED settings?

There is a 'brandnew' entry in the FAQ at the end:

Notification appearance settings - Android 8.0 and newer

AquaMail Settings > Message Notifications > Manage Notifications > At this point you change to the system / phone settings ... these options are set outside the app

Per Google requirements, notification "appearance" settings are now in Phone Settings, provided by Android (this applies to 8.0 and newer.).

Additional information you can find at the app's FAQ-page, as mentioned by @phred.

Ok, I see now.

Thanks for replies.

Unfortunately there is no 'system' way to change notification sound per app (I just wanted different sound for email and sms) BUT there is way to do it.

Android Oreo introduced something called notification channels, but they messed up setting menus and activity that allows changing notification channel settings is inaccessible from system menu.
I believe that this was the original intention of Google devs and it looks like good change but something went wrong and setting menus point to wrong activity.
I found this thread on XDA ahttps://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p20/help/how-to-set-notification-ringtone-apps-t3781234
that describes issue in detail (it's a mess)
This post in mentioned thread: ahttps://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78065930&postcount=55
contains link to APK that allows access to that hidden activity with options (I think that system settings should launch this instead of useless menu).

Maybe add some menu item in aqua mail to access those settings until google fixes it system-wide?

Change ahttps to https in links (forum will not let me post them normally for some reason)

Yes Google really did a number on both app developers and users both.

But the important part is - notification settings now operate (or supposed to) "just like on dem iPhones" :)

Seriously yes it is a mess. And on some phones it's even worse than a mess - there is no way to enable sound at all (the setting is there, but notifications still don't make a sound.. Xiaomi MIUI "latest update").

But on the other hand, other apps do not take care of Google requirements: WhatsApp beeps (yes, with own ringtone selected by me!) all night, even when night's sleep is set. They can - why not Aquamail?

They probably negotiated a special arrangement with Google, due to their "importance".

I update my phone today to android oreo 8.1 and find this bad surprise, aquamail don't change notification sound!
i'am very disappointed for this choice, I buy the pro license and I'm regretting for choosing...

I'm really angry!

Did you read the entire thread you've posted in? If so, it shouldn't be a surprise to you that you can't set custom notifications.

There is also an entry in the FAQ near the end: Notification appearance settings - Android 8.0 and newer

Yes, sterium. And also other email apps like K-9 or Bluemail can handle own notification. Do they have a deal with Google  8)? It's a pity,
It's more likely the other apps haven't yet complied with Google's requirements/demands. Which means they (the apps) won't be able to update from where they are now. My understanding is that Google will block them from the Store if they don't comply after a given (unknown by me) amount of time.
