Acquamail marks messages as read by itself

New emails get marked as "read" after 5 minutes or so without opening them.  I find that all of my messages are "read" even before I look at them. I have no other email ap on my phone.  This is not Yahoo but my own email server.

I seriously doubt that it's as you wrote - i.e. Aqua Mail doing it.

Most common case - account is set up as IMAP or Exchange in Aqua Mail (which has read / unread state sync) - and there is also a mail app set up using POP3 connected to same account.

Fetching mail as POP3 often causes messages to be marked as read on the server.

If you are there are no such apps (using POP3) - then it has to be something else most likely marking messages as read on the server or maybe just reporting them to Aqua as such. But I'd say POP3 is much more likely.

There is no other mail on my account.  I had the same ap on my older phone and it never did that.  I have no idea how to correct this problem.  Perhaps the ap is buggy.

I don't have any reason to believe that it's Aqua Mail doing it.

I don't have any reason to believe that Aqua is setting messages as read "on its own".

How is the account set up in the app now (not before)? Please long press on the account on the app's main screen -> options and folders -> you'll see one of

POP3 Options
Exchange Options

Which it is?

Is the old phone where you have the app still "alive"? Is it turned on?

If so, how is that set up, IMAP / POP3 / Exchange?

Finally, if you log into web mail (your mail provider's web site) - are your messages *read* there or still unread?

What is the mail provider? Gmail / Yahoo / Hotmail / corporate / something else?
