Error connecting
« on: August 21, 2018, 02:58:57 pm »
My website was temporarily suspended by Nominet. About 12 hours. Now my aquamail app wont connect to my email address.
I keep getting the following message:
Error Checking mail: Error Connecting: Unable to resolve host "mywebsite.co.uk" No address associated with username.

My site is all back up and running and I can use my emails from my desktop.

Any ideas? Thanks

All network errors displayed by the app are genuine. We don't make them up.

This could be a DNS propagation issue - I'd try cycling the phone's network connection off/on or rebooting.

I'd also check server names vs. what you're using in your desktop mail app - maybe server names are supposed to be:

mail.mywebsite.co.uk

or maybe

imap.mywebsite.co.uk / smtp.mywebsite.co.uk

those would be more typical than the "naked" domain mywebsite.co.uk.

Thanks for your response. All my settings are the same, and I'm currently using an alternative without issues.

Aquamail was fine up until my domain name was temporarily suspended. It just seems once site was back up aquamail wasn't recognising this. I've removed and reinstalled the app. My host cant find a problem at their end, and are equally puzzled given other mail apps are working fine.

It seems that somewhere in the system the error hasn't cleared, or aquamail doesn't think it has. The app was trying to connect to the site for most of the 12 hours it was down.
Server names are correct and are the same as before the site went down. Ive double checked this on my control panel.

Any other suggestions on this?

Aqua Mail is not cloud based. It connects to your mail servers directly from the phone and nowhere else.

You're getting a DNS error - Unable to resolve host "mywebsite.co.uk"

This error comes from low levels of Android's networking stack. We don't mess with that at all.

And so I still think the issue is on your end (the hosting provider, maybe the internet provider that your phone is connected to) and not in the app.

Maybe the internet provider's DNS server cached a "not valid hostname" report from upstream (your hosting provider) for too long. Maybe Android did.

I'd try rebooting the phone and / or using a different type of network connection as a test (mobile vs. WiFi).

But a DNS error would not be an issue "in" Aqua Mail - it's something external to the app

Oh and we don't do any "caching" (???) of DNS lookups (but your internet provider or Android itself very well might).
