mail options
« on: April 11, 2018, 09:17:25 am »
hello

under Mail,receiving setting I can see 2 options -

Message to sync = 50
Messages to cache = 250 messages

If i increase this to :

Message to sync = 100
Messages to cache = 500 messages, will cause any additional battery usage?

Also, I'm not using any scheduled sync at this moment, if i schedule a sync every 1 hour, will i notice any battery drainage or it wont consume that much of juice? the only concern is, if i schedule any sync, a background process will be running all the time?

Thanks
Sam

Hi,

Please note that the number set as “to cache” is the number of messages kept on the device and available to be shown by Aqua. The "Messages to cache" comes into play if you scroll a folder’s message list down to “see more” — then the app can more quickly re-sync the next …. messages just by checking with the server for their existence and state (as opposed to full download).

So every time you set it the digit to a higher number the app will need more time to sync, hence more battery drainage.

In addition if you shorten the scheduled sync period, the more battery the app will require.

Right as Nedialko already pointed out above --

-- when checking mail, the app "look at" the "messages to sync" worth of messages on the server.

So increasing "messages to sync" from 50 to 100 would increase battery / network usage, but only a little - there is some fixed overhead (connect, login).

You'd most likely only start seeing any tangible difference with "sync" = 250 or 500.

--

"Cache" = 500 would only help with faster "scroll down to see more".

It will increase the app's database size somewhat, over time (when the app trims "excess" messages it will keep 500 per folder, not 250).

The database tends to get slow around 100 megabytes, but most likely with "cache" = 500 you'll still have ample headroom in that respect.

where can i check this db size?
In the app's main screen (account list view);
-> menu (three-dots button) -> 'About' -> in the middle area you can see thie db size.

304 megabytes here - huge!

Is the app not sluggish as molasses for you @mikeone?

Sometimes, but rarely. For my needs absolutely sufficient.  8)
