Let's not speculate too much. I have more than a few phones here, connected to WiFi, and it's just fine.
The native Gmail app uses entirely different way to "talk" to its (Gmail) mail server.
A more meaningful comparison would be to K9 Mail (and not Cloud Magic, My Mail, Type Mail either).
What is your WiFi, exactly? Home? Hotel, airport, are you travelling? Many "public" WiFi access points have very limited (intentionally) capabilities.
In Aqua, it should be enough to turn on settings -> network -> "Use DNS", but that's enabled by default (worth checking though).
Other than that, feel free to capture the issue in the app's debug log (below).
