Can't search for older email in Gmail

I just installed Aqua Mail app for Android but I am facing a problem.
Aqua Mail is unable to search for emails which are  not on the phone. I tried to search for emails ranging from 1to 5 years old but failed.
The official Gmail app can search any email very quickly even if it is a few years old.

Is it a limitation with third party email clients in general? To test this I tried the Maildroid app too but that fails too.
I like Aqua Mail as it's much faster than the Gmail app but search is not working properly.

Kostya, having seen this question (actually two: on server-side search, and comparison to Gmail's search) on this forum many times, I am surprised it hasn't made it to the FAQ yet.

Hi, just have tried to search a 9 years old message, which never has been on the phone.

In AquaMail I tapped the "All mails" folder, then the magnifier icon (search within folders and server), then typed a word.

Found the 9 years old mail within 5 sec.

However, Gmail's extended search parameters don't work.

I tried to do the same. It gives no result. But thanks anyway. I guess these limitations can't be removed yet.

On tablet there are two magnifier glasses, one at the top and one at the bottom.


One does work only for loaded messages, the other for loaded message in folder and on server.


Are you sure that you used the right icon?

I am using a phone running android 6.0 and there is no second search icon.

Searching from the main "window" (account list) searches loaded messages only, just like it says in the query edit control. On the other hand, it searches all accounts / folders at once.

Searching from a message list searches on the server (IMAP only).

I suspect that "IMAP only" has since that changed to "IMAP and EWS" (because EWS was added much later), but cannot guarantee, as I am not using Exchange.

Yes the "IMAP only" now means "IMAP and EWS" - but that forum post is from 2013...

Please be sure to initiate search from "the" folder and not from the app's main screen.
