Thousands of messages showing as unread
« on: September 06, 2017, 03:45:53 am »
My wife just got an S8+ phone and installed aquamail. It is showing thousands of messages as unread. When I "mark all as read", that works fine. However, when it checks for new messages, the same thousands of messages show again as unread. Suggestions?

You need to tell more details of how you have things set up.
1. How are your wife's messages related to what you mark on your phone? Are you using the same e-mail account?
2. By looking at your older posts, I see that in 2015, you were using Verizon e-mail account. Are you still using that? Then, AFAIK, you are limited to POP3 connection (as opposed to IMAP).
Am I correct? Is that how your account is set in Aquamail?

If I understood you correctly, you are referring to the situation when you mark all messages read, but when your wife's phone does the sync, they show as unread.
If so, - please read the FAQ item "Why are messages loaded using POP3 not marked as read on the server?" http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=227
That's the limitation of POP3 protocol. IMAP handles that well, but Verizon doesn't provide that.

Verizon is now AOL and is IMAP, and the app knows this.

Please check server settings in Aqua:

- Long press on the account -> account setup -> Manual
- I expect you should see "IMAP" near the top of the screen and "imap.aol.com" as the server name.

If so please check this account in AOL's web mail (web site), to see if the messages there are read or not.

Finally, please

- long press on the account in Aqua Mail again -> Diag: message dates (last item)
- select INBOX
- run the test to completion
- when the app offers to send the diagnostic log file to support / at / aqua-mail / dot com - please do so.

Correct, aquamail is showing the Verizon account as AOL and server type is imap. No, they are not showing up as read in AOL, nor do I want them to be. We share the account and would rather have each phone locally designate as read/unread.

Then please switch from IMAP to POP3.

How do I switch from imap?  "imap" is greyed-out, like it can't be changed.

I just deleted the account and re-established it as pop3. Thanks.

Right.

I'm not aware of any app (mobile or desktop) that would let you change "how" an account is "connected" (the "protocol") without having to re-create it.
