Aquamail automagically reading mail again
« on: August 23, 2017, 04:32:48 pm »
Is anyone experiencing mail being "read" automagically? It seems to be isolated to my Office365 exchange account, but I am not 100% sure yet. This is more than a small annoyance. I have overlooked very important email and that isn't acceptable for my business. I live my business life on my phone and AM is a key part of my business life. Please tell me if I am doing something wrong or if this is a regression issue.

Thanks,

Pete

You can disable the new feature in
Settings -> Message notifications -> scroll down and uncheck 'Text to speech'

I might be wrong, but I suspect the OP was not talking about the text being read literally, but rather marked as read without the user actually opening the message. (Hence the quotation marks around the word "read".)
I don't think that even if "text to speech" were enabled, Aquamail would be opening and reading a new message. I just verified on my device, and when the notifications are read out loud with TTS enabled, that doesn't mark the message as "read".

Not that I know of - and hopefully if there are others, they'll comment here.

And no I can't think any way this could be related to TTS.

Of course, you are absoluteley right.
My posts were related to a different thread here in the forum. I have to search about this topic again.

Sorry for any confusion that arose.

Kostya I mean "read" as in marked "read". This is happening very frequently. I rarely use my desktop for reading email. I do keep the desktop email (browser and win64 based) clients open at all times. If this are a casual issue I would blame it on me just forgetting I read a message on the desktop. However this is a consistent issue that occurs daily and is causing me business issues now. I am also not convinced it's an Aquamail problem. Searching for clues at the scene of the crime.

Um, so you do have a desktop (Windows) mail app open and connected to this account "at all times"?

Do the messages turn read there too?

How is this app set up to connect - as POP3, IMAP, native Exchange?

Do messages turn read in web mail as well?

I will respond to all questions when I see the behavior. BUT I have had MS Outlook 2010, MS365 and Aquamail running simultaneously for 2+ years and just started seeing this over the past few months.

Well the short story is its the MS Outlook client that is the culprit. I don't know why it started doing this but here we are. It's using POP/SMTP with auth. As soon as it hits the server for new email, both Aquamail and the web UI for office exchange 365 show the message as read, but the MS Outlook client does not show them read.

Standard behavior of most if not all mail servers when messages are retrieved over POP3.

POP3 does not have a way to mark a message as read on the server (or to read its read/unread status) -- and so for people who use a POP3 app, and also check web mail even once in a while, this "heuristic" is there.

Outlook only "retrieves" messages - and the server marks any such messages ("any and all" I suppose) as read. And then since both IMAP and EWS have read/unread state sync (server <-> mail app), then that's what you get in Aqua.

Kostya,

The question about messages getting marked "read" when people access account with multiple devices, where at least one uses pop3, is very frequent. (You have one pending in the Russian part now as well.)
(Unless I missed it somehow,) I discovered that neither English nor Russian FAQ has that information.

There is this item:
Why are messages loaded using POP3 not marked as read on the server?
POP3 has no support for marking messages as read or unread. Some mail services mark messages as read once they’ve been downloaded by a mail application, some do not.

But it doesn't discuss the corollary of that. And it is not that obvious step for many app users.

So, you probably want to consider adding an item to the FAQ about this.
