Lost ability to select messages after update
« on: May 01, 2017, 09:37:45 pm »
After updating to ver 1.9.0-351 I lost the ability to select messages in smart folder. Now clicking at the left edge of a message opens the message instead of selecting it.

Went back to backup version till fixed.

To select a message please long press on it.

After selecting one message, you can simply click anywhere on the row of other messages to check them.
Must be enabled in settings:
-> Settings -> Message list -> enable 'Tap anywhere to select'

You have to do:

- Settings > Message List > enable Contact Images

OR

- Settings > Message List > enable Checkboxes (if Contact Images are disabled)

Then you can just tap shortly on the image or checkbox to select a message.

Or just tap long on the message, as mikeone suggested.

Thank you Nica.
Kostya, the old way was better. Worked without checkboxes or images taking up precious screen space.
Why change things that aren't broken?

Thank you Nica.

Why change things that aren't broken?

Reason of the change: a left-handed user had complained that messages were selected instead of opened when touching them (with his left thumb).
Thank you Paris.
Well, this (very long time faithful) right handed user is now complaining that it was taken away...... 😩
Perhaps it can become an option to make both happy?

Re: Kostya, the old way was better. Worked without checkboxes or images taking up precious screen space.

Whoa wait a second!

There were multiple posts here on the forum with people saying "hey, when you turn off both contacts and checkboxes, they should not still respond to touch because they're not there" (or similar).

And so the *consensus from users, expressed here on the forum* was loud and clear -- and so I made the change.

Wrong again?

Re: Perhaps it can become an option to make both happy?

At this point we already have:

- Contact images (per message)

- Contact images off and checkboxes taking their place

- Contact images off and checkboxes also off

- "sticky" message selection mentioned above (when there is a selection already, you can select subsequent messages by tapping "anywhere")

- Long press to select a message

- Swipe down the left side to select "all meaning just visible" message or "all meaning all loaded" messages

I can say, there is no other app which provides this wide range of comfortable possibilities for selecting messages.

That's what is known as a negativity bias/effect  :)

Also, - you are expecting that all (many) forum users are reading all threads here. I don't think that's the case. I suspect only a hand-full of forum users read or even look at most or all threads. The rest - read only some... So, some (many?) people can easily miss a discussion of some feature that works fine for them (especially if it has been in the app for long time), until it is not.

I adapt easily and can live with the many new changes. I also agree that Kostya is very responsive to the users. But, as has been mentioned, not everyone peruses every forum message and, with Google play updates being automatic, some changes then come as a total surprise after being used to the app. I really like AM, but lately it has become a moving target. As soon as I get used to another of the new ways to do something on AM it seems to get changed - again. As far as I'm concerned, AM is great the way it is. If a new "feature" is added, my preference (that's all it is) is that it be an additional change rather than removing an existing item. Improving AM is great but, as Voltaire wrote, 'better is the enemy of good' and he knew what he was talking about.

Just my 2 cents. Not a criticism. An opinion from one of Kostya's early supporters who prefers a stable product.

as Voltaire wrote, 'better is the enemy of good' and he knew what he was talking about.

Just FYI: Voltaire only popularized that phrase, but he did not author it.
Orlando Pescetti and in a very similar form, Shakespeare used it more than a century and a half earlier, and both were probably smart too.
(I had been ignorant about Pescetti, but he seemingly had some important accomplishments.)
This article describes that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_is_the_enemy_of_good
Cheers!

Well, I (we) try. In this case, it seemed that the "collective opinion" changed (but I understand now that there are users such as yourself who already got used to "no contacts no checkboxes and still single tap worked").
