Cannot see contact images

I just started using aqua mail yesterday on my Android phone with an exchange account (server is exchange 2010). I cannot see any contact images in my message list. I have the option enabled in settings, and for now see the lettered circles instead. I have looked at many options to see if something else affects this.

I have removed my account and tried again, but still not showing. Contact images do show up for my Android Outlook app, so they are available.

I have calendar, contacts and storage permissions enabled.

Has anyone else ever seen this problem?

Thanks for the suggestion, however when I go to Android accounts and AquaMail, I only see the Calendar and Email entries to enable/disable.

Does yours show Contacts also?

Which version of Aquamail are you running?

I might be wrong (as I am lucky not to be using Exchange at this point), but, AFAIR, contact synchronization for Exchange accounts appeared in Aquamail in version 1.9.*, while the latest version in Google Play is still 1.8.x.
So, unless you installed Aquamail from -dev forum here, or from Google Play-Beta: https://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=5561.0 , you would not have that capability (yet).

oh, cool. That must be it then. The Google Play version is 1.8.2-216, which is what I installed. Good to know this, as the Aqua Mail setting wasn't clear and I was driving myself crazy trying to get it working.

I don't need to install the beta/dev version, as I can just wait for an upcoming release. I just wanted to make sure something wasn't broken just in my setup.

I'm having the same issue as well except mine isn't an exchange account, it's just my regular Gmail account. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

For a Gmail account, Aqua Mail will only look up images in the phone's Contacts app.

How they get there is not this app's job -- usually any Android phone has a @gmail account in its phone Settings / Accounts (for making purchases in Play, and for syncing all kinds of Google's "stuff", which includes your Contacts).

Did your Exchange contacts sync into the phone Contacts? With images?

Oh and "sync contact images" for Exchange contacts requires Exchange 2010 or newer.

In my Android 'Contacts' app, under 'Contacts to Display', I have AquaMail selected, along with my Google ones. I'm not sure though how AquaMail would define a contact in my Contacts app... is it somebody I have specifically sent an email to through the AquaMail app?

Are you saying that AquaMail has to read the Exchange contact image info only through my Contacts app? So maybe I'm misunderstanding what the contact images should do. I could add a person to my Contacts app and see if it shows up in AquaMail, but I assumed I would see contact images for every Exchange email I get (whether I explicitly have them in my Contacts app or not).

It is Exchange 2010 that I'm using.

Since version 1.9, Aqua Mail now syncs your personal address book from the Exchange server with your phone's Contacts, with images if they're there (in your personal address book on the Exchange server).

And then it (and all other apps) can use those contacts in Contacts to show contact images (if they're there) or look up contacts.

OK, thanks for the additional info.

In Outlook 2010, I have a Global Address List, and other sub-categories, but I'm guessing that Aqua Mail wants to look under the heading I have in there called Contacts (which is currently empty for me). I assume that's what you mean when you say Aqua Mail will sync my "personal address book from the Exchange server".

If I'm understanding this right, I'll likely just forget about Aqua Mail contact images and continue with the "lettered" icons instead. I don't feel the need to create/populate an Exchange Contacts folder with names I already have in my GAL.

We would not want to sync the whole GAL to the device -- it could be thousands or tens of thousands of contacts.

And doing lookup there all the time -- over the network -- is just going to be too slow. May be OK for Outlook but that's a "desktop" app running on a much more powerful "platform" (hardware and operating system).
