This would add some amount of blank space too, in the preview area.

Basically this comes down to:

I don't think there should be empty wasted space (my examples above with "3 line preview" and only "1 line" or none of actual text), same thing with the specific case of "larger image, no preview -- have to make the item taller, unused empty space again".

And with that, sorry, there are no guarantees that a larger (even larger than with "indent previews") image would fit.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but now with the material design, the contact images are centered when there is only one line of preview (and indenting selected), which is great, but also means there would no longer be the issue you mentioned for making a "large contact image" option available.  A larger image would fill in the white space above and below it.  It wouldn't affect it when more lines of previews are shown, othere than still filling up the white space above the image.   No preview and no indenting would revert to the smaller image of course.

To me, they look about the same.  But I have a different phone than the one I took the screenshots of the old version, so I can't fully compare.  Either way, I think the images could stand to be a bit bigger.  Maybe aligning just above the top line, and just below the first preview line.
