AquaMail not syncing properly

Hello everyone, I have been using AquaMail for a long time and I have really liked it up to now.
Just recently however I switched device to ASUS Zenfone 3 and though in the first days the App was behaving properly, now it does not anymore. The thing I noticed is that it has problem to synchronize mail in background, since I have set it to update every 15 mins but when I go and check most of the times hours have passed from the last synchronization. Manual sync still works properly and it is the only way I am able to check the mail in an affordable way at the moment. Two curious facts:
1- Sometimes the App starts sincyng autonomously as soon as I open it, regardless of the time interval set;
2- I am no more able to see the "AquaMail is currently syncing" icon in the upper notification bar.

I thank in advance whoever can offer me a hand.

Most common causes:

#1 Is the app excluded from Android's "Doze Mode" (a "battery optimizer" that prevents app from working in the background)?

App settings -> mail, receiving -> you'll see a panel / prompt to do that if not already done.

#2 Other "battery optimizers" or "memory optimizers" of any kind, third party (e.g. Clean Master), or built into the phone.

#3 Swiping the app "off" from Android's "recent / running apps". On some phones, it makes Android "freeze" the apps and they can't work in the background.

#1 I am pretty sure I have already allowed the app to be excluded from that. In fact I can see no more the prompt do so under App settings -> mail, receiving.
#2 The only optimizer I have are the system ones. I have explicitly assigned "no optimization" for AquaMail alone.
#3 This is the only option left, I am gonna try not closing all apps together like I usually do and see what happens. Is there a way to work around this?

Please try.

First, those are not "running" apps (on recent Android versions, this list is preserved after reboot). Second, by swiping apps off, you're actually making Android work harder.
