how do you "mark as read"?

I must be missing something painfully obvious.  After check-mark selecting a message how do you mark it read?
My "three dot" menu has only "delete" "hide" and "show headers".

thanks, now I get it.  The trouble I have is on my old tablet its so slow I have to tap the icon and count to 10 to wait for it to actually have effect..

Please check the size of the app's database in Menu -> About.

Anything near 100 megabytes or over is going to slow things down.

To make it better, please consider reducing the app's or the account's "messages to sync" / "messages to cache", the defaults are 50 and 250 respectively. Much larger values will make the app work more when it checks mail, and also can make it sluggish.

After making those adjustments (if you do), please do Menu -> Compact the database on the app's main screen...

... and you should see better performance.
