widget stuck loading
« on: January 20, 2017, 03:49:45 am »
Hello,
Aqua-Mail is the best email app, hands down! However, when I try to put either widget on the homescreen, it just says "loading" and the widget never installs. Running Android Marshmallow, Nova Launcher. All other widgets are good. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Please try a different launcher as a way to troubleshoot (the phone's "stock" launcher would be fine for this, no need for another third party launcher).

On mine too (when I do try to use Nova, which is maybe a few times a year...)

It does the same thing on the stock launcher. Just gets stuck saying "loading".

Quite unusual.

What's the phone make / model / ROM (custom?)

Which widget is it, the counter or the message list?

Anything interesting in the logcat (if you're running a custom ROM, I assume you have a way to see that)?

Hello everyone, hello Kostya!

I had the same problem, any widget (counter and list) got stuck loading on my Samsung Galaxy S5 with Resurrection Remix (Custom ROM - Android 7.1.2) and Nova Launcher. Push Mail is active in the app, but no mail folder uses it (might not be that clever, or is it?).

Before I added the widget (a list of the smart folder with Light "Material" Theme), I disabled the scheduled mail fetch completely - which I think could've been the problem. Indeed: I've set AquaMail to sync when rebooting and restarted my phone. The wigdet loaded properly but now it doesn't show any new mails. Even the reload button on the widget doesn't change that. To test it further, I added a five minute sync schedule and the widget got stuck loading again. The reboot helped another time, but now the reload button on the widget shows a spinning circle, which does't stop. Meanwhile I get a notification for a new mail, but it doesn't show up in the widget. Apparently, the widget has no use for me right now - but hopefully you're able to fix the problem.

Another idea: I'm using the Apps Greenify and Amplify, which control app hibernation and wakelocks. I tried to exclude AquaMail from any regulations and sync e-mail manually for power saving purposes instead. But maybe Amplify regulates some wakelocks from Aquamail anyway? I will attach a screenshot of Amplify.

Last, but not least: To really represent your awesome mail app with highly customizable settings, the widget should show mails exactly as in the app - tweaked to the user's preferences regarding background, font weight etc. of read and unread mails.

You've got a lot of "non-standard" variables here -

- Custom ROM
- Greenify and Amplify
- Nova launcher

( the launcher should not be a problem, it's really good, just saying it's not the default standard launcher )

I'd say it's most likely your "battery saving" apps...

You're right - I deactivated both suspicious apps and now the widget works. Thanks! Anyway: Would you consider making the widget design (more) customizable? ;)

Re: Would you consider making the widget design (more) customizable?

What specifically are you looking for?

The widgets do have several themes and there are a few settings (in app settings -> widgets).

I know that and it's nice to have - but I think of choosing the background colors, font weight, number of preview lines of read and unread mails or also the order of sender, topic and content. Just like in the app. What particularly bothers me (with the material design widget at least) is the greyish background color of read mails and white background of unread mails. From a designer's perspective I think it should be the other way round: White as the standard background for the read mails and a highlight color (in the app I set it to light blue) for unread mails. The topic line could need some separation form the following content text as well - maybe by setting it in italic or giving it a line of it's own. It's a matter of taste and I understand that you've chosen basic likeable designs for the widget. It's more a proposal than a real problem, but I think it might be worth the programming effort to make the widget customizable as well :)

Well.... It's much more difficult to do layout / color customization in widgets as opposed to "inside the app" (or I should say "an" app).

Widgets are rendered by "a" launcher - so an app has to provide the basic layout and can also apply "some" changes on top of that, only "some".

Re: read / unread background

Actually "white for unread / gray for read" is what most "other apps" use.

But - there is a setting in the app under message list to switch the backgrounds around (white - read, gray - unread) and the widget does observe that setting too.

Subject on separate line - sorry this seems questionable to me. The widget isn't large (min size - 3x2 cells) and making each item's layout taller would reduce the number of messages visible.

Okay, I've already thought that. Respect for your work!

Awesome tip - thank you. Now the widget looks a lot more pleasing for me. By the way: I resized it to fill one page of my homescreen, that's why I wouldn't mind a separate line. But it's alright now :)
