Adding Gmail and 2 step verification

I have a new phone and am trying to add my Gmail account to aquamail, having used it very happily on my previous phone.  I have 2 step verification enabled.  When I try to add it, I use the automatic settings and then get the Google log in screen.  If I enter a generated app password, it tells me not to use a generated app password but my account password.  It accepts my normal gmail account password. Then it asks me to give aquamail access permission.  When I do, I get an error message:

Account check error

Incoming mail server (IMAP): Error connecting. failed to connect to imap.gmail.com/74.125.71.108 (port 993) after 30000ms: isConnected failed: ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused)

Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Error connecting. failed to connect to smtp.gmail.com/74.125.206.109 (port 465) after 30000ms: isConnected failed: ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused)

Please make sure the data is correct.

I had a similar problem. The only way I got around it was to remove my 2 step verification, add my Gmail to aqua and THEN reactivate 2 step verification . Then add the app specific password to aqua. This may work for you as well.

This has nothing to do with authentication (two step or not), it's a simple network / connect error, and those errors are "genuine", they are caused by things outside the app.

I have absolutely no trouble connecting to that specific IP from my home computer (using openssl, just as a test).

As for "generated" vs. "real" password -- since Aqua supports OAUTH2 for Gmail, it logs you in on Google's web site, which expects the real password.

@Kostya yes this was before oauth for gmail. I was going back and forth between k9 and aquamail  before finally deleting k9 from all my devices ☺

Yes, makes sense then.

Just wanted to ask / clarify: with Aqua's OAUTH support, two step also works fine, it's all part of Google's OAUTH "flow".

( and since Hotmail also has two-step, and there have already been cases of people having trouble with that, not knowing to use an app specific password, I added OAUTH for Hotmail too... but that's a different although related story... )
