Dissapearing emails
« on: March 01, 2016, 04:53:57 pm »
In the past 4 days, after receiving, viewing, deleting emails I don't want, keeping the ones I do and swiping out of the app to another app, when I return to check new emails, the ones I didn't delete are gone. They are not in my Deleted folder and not they're not saved on the server. Anyone else finding this happening?

They are below:

- the exact aquamail version you're using :
1.6.0.11

- your server account name:
not sure what information you're looking for here...

- the name and version of other email apps you used (and specify: mobile / desktop) :
Though Gmail is on the phone, it's only used for gmails. All my personal and business emails are retrieved through AquaMail

- imap or Pop3? In Aquamail and every other email app.
Pop3

Thanks for the fast response. This isn't a constant issue. It's only happened twice in the past 4 days but both times, important emails were erased.

This is probably happening because one of your email apps is accessing through POP3 mode your server account, downloading some messages,  then deleting them on the server.

+100500

And then the default protocol when setting up a new account in AquaMail is IMAP, and the app defaults to "remove deleted messages" (meaning "remove from the app any messages previously downloaded then found missing on the server, presumably deleted by the server").

OP: You'll be much happier if you switch to IMAP in all mail apps, or at least keep it from deleting your messages from the server.

I would agree if ANY other email app was open at any point in time in the past 6 days however, I've been out of my office sick for 6 days and no other email app has been used but Aqua for the past 6 days. I ONLY use AquaMail when I'm out of my office. I am the owner of the business and the only time my emails are retrieved on any other device is when I'm in my office and Outlook is open on my desktop and yes, it will override Aqua, naturally. I fully understand that. But it's not open and Gmail only retrieves Gmails. It  does not retrieve any of my Pop accounts. I keep them separated.

I have 2 domains on the hosted on the web with which have their own email accounts. I've been using Aqua Pro for..maybe 2 years, I'm not new to the functionality. I utilize it exactly the way I want to. I don't use Aqua to pull in any other email accounts from Outlook, Gmail or any other email accounts. I set up all my emails as pop3 accounts within Aqua. It has functioned nicely until now. I'm not doing anything differently now than ever before. No new email accounts have been added.

The first time it happened, I thought it was the "drugs" I was taking (though antibiotics do not give hallucinations) and I just deleted them by mistake. But I've been paying attention since the first time and today is the 2nd time it happened and I'm sure that no other app was opened before going back in to retrieve the email's information 20 minutes after first retrieving them.

I'm not saying it's entirely Aqua's issue. I'm just passing on the information that it's happening hoping for assistance for where else I may look.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that I did download a new Contact/Phone dialer (True Phone) 2 weeks ago however, I don't use it to send or retrieve emails. I don't even know if it does that feature. That's the only new app in a long time that I added.

Again, thanks for the help!

Um, it's quite strange really.

There is no code in the app -- at all -- to delete messages after checking mail, even as an option that's disabled by default.

Now, have you checked web mail too? Or only the app itself?

If not, please check web mail to see what's there -- if this is a sync issue, or the messages are gone from where they should be stored no matter what.

First, as just mentioned, I haven't set up any new email accounts in a year and I understand the "Delete from Server" option and I do use it, but that isn't what happened here.

Others have given the same advice but I'm a bit embarrassed to say that for 20 years I've only used POP3 to set up my email accounts, I'm my own IT dept. and don't know how to set up IMAP. My main source for retrieving emails on all other desktop device is Outlook. As mentioned previously, I don't use Outlook on my phone.

I will check with my hosting company to see if there are any email issues on the server for holding emails after viewing them on my cell. If they have any answers, I'll be back to let you know.

I've checked with our server/hosting co. Until today, when i deleted emails they were deleted from the server as well.(I'm a clean freak) They had me change a setting in Outlook to "Leave a copy of the deleted emails on the server"..I chose for 7 days. We'll see if that helps for now.

Here is how Microsoft describes setting up an IMAP account in Outlook, step by step:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/286197
(That's for manual setting, I don't know how well the "automatic" process works in Outlook.)

It is not much different from setting up a POP3 account.
Since it sounds like you might be using a small provider, - both Aquamail and Outlook may or may not be able to determine your server's settings automatically.
So, mind find our from your provider what is the name for the IMAP server (it is likely published on its website "How To" support pages). You likely know the settings for the SMTP server , as it would be the same as for the POP3 account.

Hope this helps.

Which implies that it wasn't enabled before. And even with the "for 7 days" -- Outlook *will* delete any messages older than 7 days.

---

It's not possible, AFAIK, to change from POP3 to IMAP in Outlook or any other mail app.

Only to remove the account from Outlook (or any other mail app) and then to add back, being careful with the settings.

In AquaMail, I assume it's IMAP already, but please check: long press the account -> options and folders and you'll see either "IMAP options" or "POP3 options".

If not, you will also want to remove the account and add it back -- after entering your email + password, please press Manual and not Next, and be sure to select "IMAP" near the top of the next screen (incoming server settings), and then you may need to update the server name / encryption / port #.

I belive it's "imap.i<redacted but you should recognize it>r.com", SSL, port 993. And for the outgoing, smtp.i...r.com, SSL, port 465.

Allow me to join this discussion, because I stumbled across similar behaviour. It regards an IMAP account that's mostly checked and used from my desktop computer (Thunderbird 45.0 under Windows10 Pro) and when I am away from my office also on a smartphone and/or a tablet (both Android with Aquamail Pro 1.6.1.5).

Settings on both last devices are:
No scheduled sync
No IMAP push
Hide in the app, keep on server
Remove local copies of messages no longer on the server

Over the last couple of weeks I "lost' messages from two senders; they arrive in my Inbox on the desktop, where I can read them. But for some obscure reason they have disappeared a couple of hours later when I return to the desktop.
One of the senders uses Outlook and the other Gmail.

I may in the meantime have checked my mail on either one of the Android devices, but absolutely did not remove or hide them there.
What could be the cause of this?

Raymond

Hi Raymond,
And the accounts on both mobile devices (phone / tablet) are configured as IMAP accounts -  not one of them as POP3...?

Are said messages still there in web mail? Are they in the Inbox (if they are)?

Is the desktop mail app set up using POP3?
