I assume you are asking how to disable syncing messages, right?

In the account-list view, long-press on the account name -> Options and Folders -> Account options

Uncheck "Scheduled sync"
Make sure that "IMAP Push", "Include in "Sync All"" are also unchecked (although, I am not 100% sure if those are really needed for disabling sync.).

No sync, no push, no notifications?

You should disable the respective options in the account's specific settings;

> long press on Account name > Options and folders > Account options >...
> long press on Account name > Options and folders > IMAP options >...
> long press on Account name > Special settings > Mail, receiving ...
> long press on Account name > Special settings >.Message notifications ..

If you disable sync, you should have no notifications.
So, that's redundant.

... mmh, not sure.
If "push" remains enabled notifications would appear... whether sync is disabled or not

If you disable all types of (non-manual) sync...
Note that I "disabled" Push in my previous post. ;)

Yes, disabling "Push" and "Sync" (all types) should be sufficient to 'shut down' the account.

And BTW, - for the OP:
The FAQ also has this question answered:
* Can I exclude a particular account from scheduled mail checks, without having to delete it?

I am having troubles to turn of mail checking.
I tried all options, even switched from imap tot pop on the server, but I still see new messages appearing a few times a day.
Scheduled sync for this account is off, include in sync all is off. imap push is off.

It just seems impossible to turn off mail checking for me. The checking is done less often, but still after  while I see new messages.

Maybe event based sync (i.e. triggered by network connectivity or by your launching the app)?

App settings -> mail, receiving -> scroll to the end to see "check mail on events" (completely disabled by default, but worth checking).

Found it, it indeed was event based sync! For some reason "the app resuming" was checked. I unchecked it and I haven't seen mails for the last 18 hours for that account.
Thanks!

I agree with Paris Geek, and would add to that, since we are discussing that option.
The current option explains "disable scheduled sync". It is ambiguous. E.g., does it include "PUSH"? Is that considered to be scheduled, or the author meant just truly scheduled?
And "event-based" sync, - is that scheduled or not?

So, I would even propose a step further.
Kostya, for the reasons you described (international travel, roaming, ...),  there should be a simple, single master switch, that disables all automated syncing.

Well... maybe it should be of two flavors: (a) All mobile automated syncing and (b) ALL automated syncing?
I don't know what's the best (the least confusing) way of implementing that? Maybe as a multiple choice option:
* All automatic syncing disabled
* Disable all syncing on mobile networks
* All configured syncing enabled .

I agree.
Since Kostya has already implemented a "master kill switch" as an app level setting to quickly turn off mail sync in one place:

App Settings--->Mail, receiving--->Scheduled Sync

Mikeone: (just in case): that's exactly the option Paris Geek was discussing, as apparently, it doesn't disable sync on event.
