New mail marked "read"
« on: February 17, 2016, 12:56:32 am »
I've used Aquamail for several years on a few devices and had no issues.

I recently reset my phone, reinstalled the app and set up my original accounts.

The problem is some messages in each of 4 accounts are dimmed/marked as read -- when they are clearly new messages. This occurs on a POP account, an IMAP account and Gmail. When I look at the same messages on a different device (tablet), Aquamail shows them as unread.

Example - I wake up in the morning with 30 new messages, 20 of them show as being read.

Could this be an application bug, an install issue, a setting, or spyware/malware on my phone (and how do I go about finding it?!)?

Thank you for any input you may have,

Blake

Please check web mail as your reference point -- the app syncs with the mail servers not other apps (itself included) on other devices.

And since you mention POP3 -- most if not all mail services / servers will mark as read any messages retrieved over POP3, which will then sync into AquaMail if set up using IMAP. This POP3 may even be your desktop mail app if you use any.

And also specifically for POP3 read/unread heuristic -- please try the latest -dev version, it has some changes there (since POP3 doesn't have read/unread sync with the server, the app has to come up with read/unread state on its own).

I've checked the webmail for all 4 accounts and they display messages as being unread, though Aquamail shows them as read.

I have the same accounts on a tablet in Aquamail and the messages display as unread, even after a refresh. Overnight, when this happens the most, the only device accessing mail at the same time is the tablet. Maybe I will delete the accounts in the tablet and set them up again to match the settings of the phone in case there is a difference in how the tablet is receiving the messages and reporting back to the server.

If I have 10 new messages in the inbox, not all 10 will be marked as read, the ones marked read are not grouped together even - they might be messages 2,3,6,7,8,10.

Since the problem didn't start until a fresh install of Aquamail on a reset phone, it has been confusing to track down - especially since it only affects this one device.

Thank you for your help.

If this one is a POP3 account, then the changes I mentioned above should help (in the recent -dev versions).

About IMAP accounts -- not sure what to think, for IMAP message states get synced from the server (and so should be unread if they are unread in web mail... but I understand that they're not).

Yes, I would try a fresh reinstall too -- and in particular also please check (after re-adding the accounts) that they end up as IMAP. Long press an account -> options and folders -> you'll see either "IMAP options" or "POP3 options".

Well, before trying a new version, I deleted the accounts on the tablet and added them new. I let Aquamail determine the server settings (VS manual). So far, this has solved my problem!
I would guess that, for some reason, the tablet was accessing the mail via POP rather than IMAP - and thus sending a "mark as read" indicator to the server when it was received (on the tablet).
No idea why I didn't have this problem before - but this simple step seems to have worked. I'll reply again if I find the issue returns or what I do to solve it.

Thank you!

Yes, that would do it -- most if not all mail servers mark as read any messages retrieved over POP3.

Same problem here. Only happens with Gmail. My pop3 account is fine. When I open Aquamail several emails are marked as read. This just started happening with last beta update.

Yep, that's my question too -- any POP3 access involved (via other apps, maybe Outlook on Windows or something).

---

Because I'm a bit puzzled -- not seeing this in either of my two Gmail accounts on about 3-5 phones I use daily.
