Hi Mike,
Regarding the difference between the POP3 and IMAP protocols you could have a look into my post of another thread:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=4209.msg22874#msg22874 [nofollow]
Thanks Mike. If I may say so, it is a bit biased towards IMAP and does not represent POP3 fairly. With POP3, emails are not tied to specific machines because one does not have to delete them from the server. For multiple machines, it is possible to have the same emails downloaded and stored locally. I delete them from the server from time to time so as to keep space down. With POP3, backups are naturally there - in the email client - controlled by me on my own machines. With IMAP, some more elaborate method has to be found if one wants to make local backups.
The drawback with POP3 on Aquamail is that BCC'd items sent from one machine cannot be moved to the [Sent] folder on another machine. This unfortunately rules out Aquamail for me at the moment. This is a shame because I prefer its more secure operation (i.e. not using its own servers).

Mike, for almost all purposes in the modern days, IMAP is superior to POP3.
POP3 is the older protocol with much more limited functionality.
I am not aware of anything that is not possible to do with IMAP (except for the problems inherent to the limitations of POP3). All what you described is possible with IMAP.
With the desktop e-mail programs (e.g. Thunderbird), - you can have local copies of all the messages in the same way as you can do with POP3.

Actually, according to the POP3 protocol itself, you might not be able to download messages to multiple devices. It is only the implementations that some POP3 servers/providers enabled that allow you doing that. (E.g. Gmail effectively doesn't.)
And with some POP3 servers you can crash your mailbox if several clients are trying access the same mailbox at the same time.

So, in short, - IMHO, POP3 should be retired by most providers.
But, for now, if what you have is sufficient for you, - you can use it while that lasts.

FWIW, there are even IMAP backup tools / scripts which can fetch messages fully and store them in standard .eml (MIME RFC 822) files.

But oh well, people have different needs / use different workflow, to each his own.

Yes, these are the 'more elaborate' methods that I referred to. They are not really seamless or user friendly.
Looking forward to the next Aquamail beta, if it has 'move to sent' functionality for POP3 ;)

- So, with this beautiful car, how do I drive from New York to Paris?
- Sir, that is impossible, there are no roads between New York and Paris, because, well.. there is an ocean between them.. If you want to get from New York to Paris, you need an aircraft. Besides, with an aircraft you can get to most places much faster than with your car.
- Yes, I understand that, but the aircrafts are more complex and very complicated. OK, I'll wait until you will come up with an option for my car to drive from New York to Paris. I hope it will be implemented soon, right?

Mike, please, reread what has been described in this thread, POP3. It is not a shortcoming of the app, but rather a principal limitation of POP3 protocol: no folders besides Inbox can be synced. Period.
So, if you are relying on POP3 protocol, you cannot do anything with folders on one  device (which are inherently local with that protocol) and transmit that information about those folders to a different device (or the server).

PS. Maybe this thread explaining the same situation with Thunderbird (replace Thunderbird with Aquamail or any other mail client and all the arguments stand) would be helpful for understanding.

Au contraire, it is you that needs to reread. I was never seeking a synched folder for POP3. Kostya understood what I requested.

Excusez moi monsieur, if I misunderstood you. Mea culpa!
I had reread your original message before posting my latest response. I reread it again now, and I still don't understand what you need.

I use pop3 with two devices and BCC sent emails to myself. I want to move the BCC'd email generated by the first device to the 'Sent' folder on the second device.
I read that you wanted to do some magic on your 1st device so that the message in the Inbox would end up in "Sent" on your second device. That requires syncing folders.

However, if Kostya understood what you wanted, or even if you think he understood that and you are happy with it, - that's good. I don't need to know any details.

- I understood

- I wrote that it's more complicated and possibly fragile than it seems

- Mike responded "oh well, I'll just use a different app"

- At this point Mike and I parted amicably, no hurt feelings, no name calling, like real gentlemen

I just want the facility to move some emails from [Inbox] to [Sent] locally - just like they can be moved from any folder to [Deleted] or from [Draft] to [Sent]. That way, when I BCC myself from one device, I can put it in the [Sent] folder on the second device when it is received. No synching. POP3 does not synch anything - not even [Inbox] - because it is always one way. That is how I want it - all my stuff on my devices and not held 'out there' somewhere. This is the attraction of Aquamail, which does not copy emails onto its own servers.
