Pop3: move from Inbox to Sent
« on: January 22, 2016, 03:21:35 am »
I have just started with Aquamail and this is my first post. On a brief search, I could not find an answer. I use pop3 with two devices and BCC sent emails to myself. I want to move the BCC'd email generated by the first device to the 'Sent' folder on the second device. I presume this should be possible because the folder is already there and the action is, in principle, no different to moving to the 'Deleted' folder. How do I do it?

A short answer is "No".
1. With POP3 you cannot access any folders rather than Inbox (incoming mail).
2. In most cases, and especially when you have multiple devices, it is better to use IMAP. It is only when you have a stubborn e-mail provider who doesn't provide IMAP that you should use POP3... Or, better yet, change the provider.  ;)

The reason I questioned this is because Aquamail already has its own folders - [Sent], [Draft], [Deleted] - that do not correspond to POP3 boxes. Emails can be moved to/from [Delete] and [Draft] within Aquamail. I guess it should be possible to simply include [Sent] with these, if this were requested.

Where are you seeing this?

I thought too this was possible, but right now unable to find how (not in message list, not in message view, not in two panel mode drag and drop).

But yes, you're right, it should be possible to add Sent there, assuming you can help me find it.

Thanks for your quick response Kostya - and for writing a good app!
It is not as direct as I may have suggested. In [Inbox], press and hold the email and select the bin -> goes to [Deleted]. In [Deleted], press and hold email and click the up arrow and it goes to [Inbox]. When typing a new mail, click 'save' to move to [Draft]. In [Draft], one has to actually send or delete the email. Sending puts it into [Sent] and deleting puts it into [Delete] of course. In [Sent], press and hold provides the option to move to [Delete].
So I think all the code must be there somewhere and it is just a case of adding modified buttons to the menus.

Thank you Mike, yes it's true that POP3 accounts do have device-only special-use folders.

But there is an "iceberg" here, in terms of potential for unintended side effects. I'll keep it in mind.

Oh, that is a pity Kostya. It is a feature that I find important. I will return to BlueMail (as a second best) and keep my eyes open for an Aquamail update.

Hi Mike,
Is there a specific reason that you need to stay with POP3 even you are using two devices with the same account?
The IMAP protocol should be the better solution in this case.

Hi Mikeone. I am not that familiar with the difference between POP3 and IMAP, but I know that I will have to pay my ISP extra. I just want to download my email from the server from two mobile devices and a laptop without synchronising or deleting from the server.

Hi Mike,
Regarding the difference between the POP3 and IMAP protocols you could have a look into my post of another thread:

This is the first time I hear about an ISP charging extra for using IMAP for accessing e-mails. Are you sure?

Hi StR,
Yes, that's possible.
Here in Germany there are some webmail providers (like GMX.de, WEB.de,...) which are offering IMAP only in their paid plans:
"Note that IMAP is available only with GMX TopMail and GMX ProMail.'

> officially, but I'm using IMAP even with my free webmail accounts of both providers 8)

Ash, GMX... I remember that it's got some weirdness ... It offers some storage limits to Germans, but it's unlimited for everyone else...
