I discovered a very minor "feature": The phone is connected to Wi-Fi, but the connectivity is absent (it requires authentication via browser, and lost the previous one). In Aquamail, while viewing a message, I choose "view" -> "headers". Aquamail shows that it's working, and then nothing happens. I.e. there is no message that it cannot connect to the server or anything else.
I would expect it to produce some error message, informing while it hasn't displayed the headers.

Hmmmmm....... One of those "can't reproduce" things.

There should be a modal popup ("please wait / view headers") while the app is *trying* (if this message's full headers have not been loaded before) -- and then a "toast" message when the modal goes away.

Does the phone's screen lock / turn off while it's trying, perhaps?

I don't remember if there was "please wait", but there was some indication of Aqua working. But there was no toast message.
No, no screen lock or turning off. Aqua was giving up within less than a minute .... more like 15-30 seconds

@StR -- 30 seconds or so sounds about right. I assume the "indication that the app is working" disappeared.

Is it possible that you'd missed the "toast" message near the top of the screen ("toasts" have semi-transparent backgrounds and stay on the screen for a couple of seconds)?

There is not supposed to be a modal red flashing window with "something horrible happened!!!!"

Aah, you are talking about the "toast" message in the notifications.. That's quite possible that I missed it.
I was expecting some error message on the screen, since I was waiting for the app to show me the header, and it didn't.  I am not (necessarily) watching for the notification area while working with the active-screen aps.
I am not expecting a sort of "background response" to the "foreground" request.

A toast is not a status bar notification. Now if you'd put the app into the background as it was trying to load -- yes, I can see how there won't be any message.

A toast is not a status bar notification.
Then I don't think I've missed the toast message.
I've repeated this 2-3 times with Aquamail being in the foreground all the time. While I might have missed that message if it disappeared by itself (i.e. without me dismissing it), I don't think I'd miss that in the subsequent times.
Next time I am in that situation, I'll make sure I watch it carefully.
