There should be nothing special about a VPN -- at the same time, I have no idea if your VPN does the right thing.

AquaMail doesn't care, really. It just uses standard networking functions to do what it needs to do.

My WiFi router is behind a VPN essentially -- L2TP, that's how providers set things up where I live -- no issues.

A VPN on the phone should be directing network traffic in a way that does not require all applications to be modified.

Things I'd check right away -- is whether mail ports are forwarded (and not just web browsing ports).

IMAP: 143, 993. POP3: 110, 995. SMTP: 25 (rare), 587, 465.

If you have any @gmail accounts in AquaMail with OAUTH, the app will also need access to:

https://accounts.google.com and https://www.googleapis.com if it's an account *not* present in system settings

and

whatever Google Play uses to do its OAUTH thing if it *is* present in system settings (I have no idea what "endpoints" Play talks to).

I don't think this is related to rooting (and believe that VPN apps won't run without root).

Yeah, maybe you've tried them all --

-- but do you *know* if they forward traffic on mail port numbers?

-- do you know if they're supposed to work with mail apps?

Maybe you can try K9 Mail as a reference point.

So, as a first step it could be helpful to follow Kostya's suggestion and try K9 mail.

Re: No I don't know all of this

A VPN app should not require modifications to "mail apps", "twitter apps", "web browser apps", "calorie counting apps" etc.

It should just let those apps work as before, but redirecting traffic the way you expect it to.

If you are not very technical and don't understand what I'm trying to tell you about "port numbers" and "TCP/IP" --

-- please contact the VPN app's support and ask them *specifically* if their VPN is supposed to work for e-mail apps using IMAP and SMTP, using the port numbers I've given above.

Re: K9 Mail

Yes, always a good idea to do a "sanity check".

I would say that those questions should be first addressed to the IT people who provide the VPN access. (I suspect it's a corporate VPN.) It would be likely the corporate VPN policies that might limit access to certain resources (what is allowed and what is not), than the apps properties.

StR - yes, that's a good point.

My impression was of VPN apps "for security" which make your network connection "pop out" somewhere else geographically.

But maybe it is a corporate VPN (but then he probably wouldn't be trying "all VPN apps", which he mentioned).

Kostya, you are probably right...
"several vpn apps" made me wondering why he/she would be trying different vpn apps, but I didn't think about that type of vpn. For a moment I was actually thinking if there were any vpn clients that might be distributed by wi-fi router makers - to ease access to home networks...

No, no idea. TCP/IP socket code is in Android, not app.

Is your account @gmail?

Is it set up as such -- Gmail and Google Apps -- in AquaMail?

If so, please remove it and add back as "Internet Mail", with entering your password (just like you had to do in K9 Mail which doesn't support OAUTH).
