Addressing problem
« on: September 25, 2015, 02:32:38 pm »
Kitkat 4.4.4 and AM 1.5.9.13

In my android stock "contacts" app I long ago added a name "Fam" which actually contains 5 email addresses separated by commas. (My way of creating a group).
When I click on Fam in the Contacts app it opens AM with all 5 email addresses in the to field. Great?
It used to do the same in AM. But recently, when I am in AM and click on the write icon and then enter Fam in the to field, only the 1st email appears instead of all of them. This only started happening recently. Just a few days ago, Fam made all the email addresses appear. So this is a recent change. Is it a bug or a setting that changed. How do I go back to the previous behavior?

It was better before. AM doesn't have to follow the others. Being able to use groups is very useful.
Kostya, please go back. Or at least make it an option. This is a step backwards. I'm moving to an earlier version.
Edit :
I'm traveling. Where can I find the previous version?

Thank you Paris.
I didn't know android contacts could have groups, which is why I created my roundabout way. I don't use Gmail.

I just tried what you describe and it works.  I will use it, though the other way was better for me:
"Fa" autocompleted with all the 5 emails. This newer way involves 3 steps:
-> click on To
-> groups tab
-> selected group
But I can live with it.

Hi someone,
Your description leads me to a new suggestion for simplifying the input of "Groups":

> starting the input with "#" will also show the existing groups, not only the actual email addresses.

E.g.:  #Fa

If this could  be possible to implement, it would be a meaningful improvement. Kostya, what are your thoughts on this option?

However, this would also require a more detailed description in the selection window:

"Insert group into: To? Optionally you can use a prefixed # to show also your existing groups in the "To" field."

Regards
Mikeone

Why not simply restore the previous behavior? Even as a setting option if necessary.

It's worked fine for all the years I've used AM. It's simple and worked well. No need to remember a # code or anything.

Both methods could co-exist.

#groupName is a common placeholder for mailing lists.

That was the idea behind my suggestion and my recommendation to extend the description in the "Selection window".

"5 email addresses separated by commas"

That was K9 Mail's "poor man's implementation" of group addressing.

Yes, the recipient entry code has changed in 1.5.9 ("chips").

I believe the comma based format should still work if you pick this contact via Menu -> System Contact Picker, or the app's own contact picker (not necessarily the Groups tab, try picking it on the Contacts tab).

Not when auto-completing though, sorry (the new "chips" and auto-completing code is based on something developed by Google for Gmail, and it's quite difficult to make changes there).

I understand Kostya. I'll just get used to the new recommended method.
Thanks for the explanation.
Terrific app.
(what is "chips"?)

"Chips" is a kind of how to show contacts in the "recipients" field(s): To,  cc,  bcc

You will find this option in the Settings > Contacts > Contact chips

However, I guess there will be "some" further technical specialties behind the scene...

"Chips" is how Gmail and "stock Android Email" (when there was one) show recipients on the compose screen -- as, well, chips (blocks with contact image + name, not text).

- tap a chip to easily delete a recipient or switch between a contact's addresses (home, work, etc.)

- long press and drag and drop a recipient chip (say, from TO to CC)
