1.5.9.12-pre6
« on: August 31, 2015, 08:43:15 pm »
http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.5.9.12-pre6.apk

---

+ New UI for "shrinking image attachments"

* enable it (and maybe select a standard "shrinkage") in app settings -> composing and sending.

* attach files, and you'll see estimated "shrunken" sizes

* if you wish to change or turn off the shrinking while composing your message, use Menu -> Shrink images

Now works when forwarding attachments too (if the original incoming message was received by this version).

+ Updated transations

Need a new item:

<string name="new_message_menu_resize_images">Shrink images</string>

This is for the Menu, should not be too verbose.

I'd really like to get these:

AR, DE, FR, IT, SK, TR (which are otherwise fully complete).

---

+ Новый интерфейс для "уменьшения вложенных картинок"

* включите (и может быть, выберите сразу уменьшенный размер) в настройках -- написание и отправка

* вкалывайте, вкладывайте, и увидите "оценочные" размеры уменьшенных картинок.

* если захочется поменять или отключить степень "уменьшения" в процессе написания сообщения, то это в Меню -- уменьшить картинки.

Теперь работает и при персылке вложений (если входящее письмо было получено этой версией).

<string name="new_message_menu_resize_images">Réduire taille images</string>

Not totally satisfying, but I cannot afford more words
The correct wording should be: "Réduire la taille des images"

Short is always good...

The correct wording would be: "Réduire la taille des images"
My French was very limited and now it is rusty as well.
So, am not an expert,  but my curiosity is chewing me.
I saw that some image resizers use just "Réduire des images" for shortness.
I understand that it is jargonish, and  literally means "reduce images", while the full version means "reduce the size of images".
If my understanding is correct (is it?) why "Réduire des images" wouldn't be a good (and short) term?

Hi @StR,

"Réduire des images", means "Resize some pictures".
It would be more correct to say "Réduire les images" (Resize the pictures).

Shrink is not exactly resizing, so the need to add "taille" (size) in French.

But you're right, one could say "Réduire les images", the issue would be in the answers:
In English, there's no gender/plurar for adjectives. In French, you have to choose among:
Grand, Grande, Grands, Grandes for "Large" (singular masculine, singular feminine, plural masculine, plural feminine)

"Réduire les images" - "Grandes" is closer to "Resize those large pictures" than "Shrink pictures to Large size".

In English "Shrink pictures" - "Large" means : Shrink pictures to Large size.
Again, this is in the "nuances", there are often many ways to translate...

Rgds

PS. How would you translate those strings into Spanish?

Thank you for your detailed response.

Les vs. des: -- That's obvious. Mea culpa. I was writing on the phone, while being repeatedly disturbed.

I don't think it is the conjugation of the adjectives that plays big role in the possible reading of "Réduire les images" - "Grandes" as "Resize those large pictures".
Rather, you get that feel from the fact that adjectives in French follow the noun (in contrast to English and some other European languages).
("Réduire les images grandes" vs. "Reduce/resize/shrink large images")

Actually, if you were to replace "-" with ":" in your reading, it might become less confusing:
"Réduire les images":  "Grandes".

And "shrink/resize images" - "large" doesn't sound very smooth in proper English, but it is a typical usage in computer menus. There are many computer menu items that we all got used to, but that don't sound correctly in the proper English. And some of those have actually propagated back into "common" English.

@StR, thanks.
Would you please post the translations (of all strings, since they are together) in Spanish, to let me figure out the result in a Roman language (if Spanish is your native language, of course)? Or in French?

Disclaimer: my Spanish is far from fluent, so, if there is a native speaker on the forum, ignore the rest of the message below.
(Level of confidence: correctness: 93%, elegance/common terms for computer menus: 73%.  Confidence in the level of confidence: 10% [just kidding])

Similarly to French, the full version for "shrink [the] images"  would be "reducir el tamaño de las imágenes". But I think "reducir las imágenes" is acceptable

(By the way, as a followup to the previous conversation, in English, the article "the" [that is similar to "las"] is omitted,- but it is a common practice for menus.)

<string name="new_message_menu_resize_images">Reducir las imágenes</string>
<string name="prefs_compose_resize_images">Reducir las imágenes de gran tamaño al enviar </ string></string>
<string name="prefs_compose_resize_images_large">Grande</string>
<string name="prefs_compose_resize_images_medium">Mediano</string>
<string name="prefs_compose_resize_images_none">No reducir</string>
<string name="prefs_compose_resize_images_not_supported">No es compatible con este dispositivo</string>
<string name="prefs_compose_resize_images_small">Pequeño</string>

Here's a comparison between French, Spanish and English screens in Mail (IOS).
The "size" (taille) is explicitely mentioned, and the meaning is very clear
...

In those menus, Apple (despite not being MS) is very Wordy.
(pun intended)

Humor aside,-  when I am preparing PowerPoint slides for my professional (technical) presentations, I use short, often incomplete sentences (unless it is a direct quotation). That's what I've learned from my mentors years ago.
When I am teaching a workshop/class on the subject of effective technical/scientific presentations, shortening sentences on the slides is one of the tools we discuss. (The art of effective technical presentations is one of my passions.)

I am not a UI/UX designer. But in the past 2-3 years, I've discussed various issues with active UI and UX designers (friends and colleagues), attended presentations/workshops. And there are many similarities in the UI and UX approaches with those in creating effective technical presentations.

The common trend is to make the text (titles, assertions, ...) simple and quick to comprehend with a brief look.

So, on one hand I am surprised by these Apple's menus. On another hand, - I wonder if departing away from the "cryptic" computer menus is one of those differences that made the iPhone popular among very broad non-technical crowd.
One thing is apparent: there is a difference in the menu structure paradigm between iOS and Android.
