IMAP for live.com outlook.com hotmail.com
« on: August 23, 2015, 05:36:45 am »
Perhaps someone can answer this question.

I have my live.com email address setup as IMAP on AquaMail.  It works nicely however the IMAP Push component does not seem to work.

The only way to get the emails to come into by Inbox is to hit the Sync Button.  The emails do not automatically come in like my other IMAP emails.

Is this a Microsoft issue or do I have a setting incorrectly chosen within AquaMail.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I've never used MS' e-mail, so I don't know. I know that MS introduced IMAP for their e-mail services very late, in the Fall of 2013. But AFAIR, they didn't have "IDLE" enabled at that point. (And I am not sure if they every introduced it. -- I wouldn't be surprised if they've never enabled it.)

These references support this fact:

I am sure Kostya knows it better.

Also, - you may want to make sure that you have "Push" enabled in the following places in the configurations:
1) Settings -> Mail Receiving -> IMAP push
2) [Account] -> Options and Folders -> Account options -> IMAP Push
3) [Account] -> Options and Folders -> IMAP options -> IMAP Push session duration  (set to the desired value)
4) [Account] -> Options and Folders -> Folders -> [Folder Name] => (if configured to be synced, e.g. Inbox, Drafts, ... ): "Use IMAP Push".
In your case, [Folder Name] is Inbox.

[Account] - means the long-touch on the account name in the account list.

HTH.

I guess only "scheduled" sync but no push, since they both don't support IMAP IDLE...

Thank you for your quick replies.

In doing some further research, the "Push" feature is apparently not available through Live.Com, Outlook.Com and Hotmail.Com because the IMAP IDLE is not supported as stated.

To better schedule the email pulls without compromising battery life, I still kept the Poll time to 30 min but changed the Event Types.

Settings -> Mail Receiving -> Event Types

I added the  App Resuming, WiFi Connection, Mobile Data, etc event types and this generally gives me the functionality that I want.  Every time I open the app the Event Type triggers and polls my Live.Com email address thus simulating a "Push" type environment.

I did however look at the Custom Check Interval option with the Account Settings -> Mail Receiving but I was not able to get this function to work.  Regardless of the time interval, the account was not polling at all.

The Custom Check Interval would be a good option if it worked.  If anyone has this feature working, please chime in and let me know.  My curiosity is getting the best of me on this.

The time interval scheduled  check works for me just fine. (I have Android 4.1.2.)
I vaguely remember reading that some energy-saving features in lollipop (or, maybe it was Samsung feature?) were preventing Aquamail from checking mail while the phone was sleeping.

Correct:

Push mail is an optional, not mandatory, part of IMAP (called IMAP IDLE).

It's not supported by Hotmail (any actual @domain part, i.e. @hotmail / @outlook / @live, ...) or Yahoo.

Custom interval:

Does the app check mail in this account at all (but with the default interval) or not at all?

The app level "Scheduled mail check" should be enabled, it's the "master kill switch" to quickly turn off mail sync in one place.
