messages not staying on server when using notifications
« on: February 01, 2013, 05:17:37 pm »
if i just open aqua mail and manually sync then the downloaded message is left on the server.however if i have notifications on wether i click the hide button or not it removes the message from the server. hide and keep on server on the open application works fine again leaving the message on the server but if i use it on the notification pulldown it hides the message but removes it from the server .....seems to be a problem with the notifications in general.
i am using a nexus 7 tablet and androis 4.2 notifications can be acsessed from a drop down notification list
hope that helps

any ideas welcome

hope you get well soon Kostya

Sorry to hear about this.

I can't think of why this should happen -- are you using Gmail in POP3 mode by chance chance?

Hi,
I have the same problem.
Made several crossed tests with diferent mail App and diferent mail servers.
This annoying problem, persists ONLY WITH AQUA MAIL USING GMAIL SERVERS WITH POP3 MAIL ACCESS CONFIGURED.
Hope some solution will be found ASAP, to correct this annoying problem.

Gmail's POP3 server is very special.

It only "shows" each message to mail apps once, and then it appears to be gone.

This is how they made it work, on purpose, to be able to handle the typically humongous number of messages in a typical Gmail account.

Please read and understand Google's help pages on using POP3, or just use IMAP (my app's preset for @gmail is IMAP):

Hi Kostya,

Hope you are feeling better on your past illness !
About Aqua Mail let me say first of all in my humble opinion, and in the Android mail App world, it is one of the two best Android Mail App, being the other Profimail.

Now analyzing your suggestion to use IMAP instead POP3 with Gmail servers, I have a small problem doing that with Aqual Mail.
It is exactly the opposite problem I had with POP3 configuration.
If with POP3 mail I can't prevent Gmail from deleting mail downloaded with Aqua mail, with IMAP I can't delete unwanted messages with Aqua mail from Gmail server.

If possible for me I would like to use POP3 because I could download and read all the mail in my Tablet, leaving only all the needed mail to be downloaded later in my laptop.

In that matter, several mail app deals correctly with Gmail in POP3 configuration.
I'm sure you will find a quick solution to solve this problem between Aqua mail and Gmail.

Hi,

Yes, pneumonia is better.

The POP3 issue is not about my app, it's how their server works.

For example, for a while I was dual-booting between Windows and Linux, with a separate copy of Thunderbird in each. If I received messages in Thunderbird/Windows, I'd not receive them again in Thunderbird/Linux, and vice versa.

Gmail provides a so-called "recent" mode for POP3, where it always makes available messages from the last 30 days, it's described at the links above.

As for IMAP, deleting messages from @gmail accounts is certainly possible. I do it every day, sometimes several times before my morning coffee :)

The right way to delete messages for @gmail, using IMAP, is to "move to deleted", where the deleted folder has to sync with "[Gmail]/Trash" (this is configured automatically in my app) And "Move to deleted" is the default delete mode for every new account....

Can you describe what issue(s) you're seeing when deleting from @gmail using IMAP?

Hi again,

Thanks for your fast reply, following your suggestion to configure IMAP with "move to deleted" option, (was configured with "Hide in app, keep on server" option), and now it is deleting messages in Gmail server. Thanks !

Only with POP3 I can't get any success preventing the mail messages from being automatically deleted after downloading them to Aqua mail...

By the way, where are stored, (which folder), the messages and attachments database ?
Is it possible to move them to an external SD card on a rooted device ?
I noted that you released a new Aqua mail update, (v.1.2.2.10), I will download and try it.

POP3 is the same way -- my app does not delete messages when checking mail.

And as I said, POP3 is how Gmail's server works, this is intentional on their part, and has nothing to do with the app.

You may want to try using "recent mode", by changing the login for pop.gmail.com from "your_email@gmail.com" to "recent:your_email@gmail.com".

As my tablet is rooted I would like to make some tests.

Hi,

The database is where the system puts it -- I'm using Context#getDatabasePath

Usually under /data/<package name>/databases (I guess), but some manufacturers use a different path

Hi,
Found it in data/data/package_name/databases.
Is it possible to move it or mount the whole application to external SD card on rootted devices?

This is not a configuration I support, but there are people who've done it, and it worked for them (using Link2SD, I believe).

hiya once again
i use virgin media mail...

what i am trying to do is
i store important messages in windows live mail on my PC so when i get a notification of a message on my nexus 7 i look at the content without opening aquamail.
if the message is one i want to keep then i dont open it in aquamail but wait and download it using live mail.if its something i dont want to keep i open it in aquamail.
now i find that when recieving a notification on my nexus 7 and without opening aquamail i cannot download it to windows live mail. the notification seems to be marking the message on virgin media mail as read.

also a few people have reported when i send an email via aquamail they are recieving 2 copies of each mail item.

any idea whats happening

Yes, opening a message marks it as read. It does not delete from the server, just marks read (and for IMAP, this is synced back to the server).

You can set mark read to "Never automatically" in the app's settings (in extended mode), it's under "Message display".

As for a message being sent twice -

I could investigate if you recorded a debug log, capturing you sending mail.

The instructions are here: http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=232

Thanks.
