Edge user request
« on: August 12, 2015, 07:44:52 am »
Hi Kostya,

I know I'm going to sound a bit picky bordering snobbish..but I'd really like to hear your feedback (however sarcastic it may be). You know the S6 edge has this option to light up the edge when a mail arrives through the stock app...(I'm guessing you would've caught the drift by now....) I don't know whether the edge lighting is restricted to only stock apps or not...but it would really make my day if you could please consider adding this feature in the next update for edge users...

Look forward to your feedback/ sarcastic remarks...

Hi,

You will find a description "How to use edge notifications" for Samsung's Galaxy S6 edge:

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/04/14/how-to-use-samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-notifications/

Since I don't own this device I'm not sure if this could be of help to you.

Regards

Hi Mike,

Yes, I do know this but I'm asking whether we can have Aqua mail to light up the edge. It seems there needs to be permissions that needs to be set. I don't know if this is a ROM level customization or if it's an app level. If it's a ROM level, then this feature will remain a dream...

However, I have a feeling that it's an app level customisation. The reason is that in the link it says that the edge notification is for 3 different apps - missed calls, messages, message+ but in my phone the 3 apps are - missed calls, messages, email. This could mean 2 things - either the reviewer in the link had a custom rom or is using an app that's got permission to access the edge notification.

I hope Kostya can throw some light...

You know, that's my everyday personal phone and I like having the date/time/alarm info on the edge when I'm in bed and the phone is on a shelf nearby, but...

...as for other apps, I think the only thing I've seen is the status bar notification getting mirrored there (I guess you're supposed to swipe the edge area just right, and then it scrolls).

I've seen the API, yes, it's an app level customization.

But if it's essentially the same as mirroring a "status bar notification" -- an icon + some text -- then I'm not clear on the benefits.

I'm not an expert here though, as a user, so perhaps you can clarify / elaborate?

PS - I've owned two or three different Galaxy Note models, and only used the stylus once or twice... Just to give you an idea of how dumb I am about all these "latest and greatest" technologies.

Hi Kostya,

Thanks for the reply and also for point out that the edge notifications are app level customisations. Actually, what you have mentioned about edge swipe to see the notification is one of the features and in fact it shows all pending notifications irrespective of the app.

My request was more specific...you know with the stock email app if you have the phone face down and you get an email the edge lights up white for about a few seconds. Actually the edge lights up (whenever the phone's face down) when you get a call, sms, or email. This is what I was asking..can Aqua mail get this feature too...this is why I was wondering whether this is a ROM level customisation or an app level...

Love to hear your views...

Lights up? When the phone is "face down"?

Gee, I've had this phone since March or so, never noticed that.

I'll take a look if I get the time.

Well, I've downloaded their sample for "The Edge Screen" and what it does is:

Adds another "strip" to the edge area, and to see it, you have to sort of gently rub the screen where it curves (it takes me 3-5 attempts, maybe that's just me).

But before you scroll the edge area that far, to this particular sample app's "strip", on my S6 Edge I see a strip with the phone's current notifications, and AquaMail's was present there.

So I'm still quite confused by this feature. I do like having the clock and alarm indicator there, but the rest... Just not sure about how it works.

I'm also not sure if it's possible to for an app to force the edge area to show its notification specifically, i.e. skip the "rub the screen" part.

Oh, and the sample app showed in system settings under where you can select among the different -- very tall (long) -- previews of what your edge area might look like.

NOT where you have simple toggles for "notify in the edge area about missed calls / SMS / Email messages". That one would be better, I think,, but alas, seems to be reserved for Samsung's own apps...
