Unable to download to the Inbox
« on: August 04, 2015, 07:58:05 pm »
I have been successfully using Aquamail on my Galaxy S3 phone for some time, and I have set up 3 accounts on it.  The server for my main account has around 8,000 messages in its Inbox, dating back to 2011.

All accounts were set up using POP3, but I was concerned about the possibility of reaching the memory size limits on the phone.  I can find no way of deleting old messages on Aquamail.  Am I missing a method of selecting all e-mails dated prior to a chosen date, which could then be deleted?

In the absence of this I had an idea...  I deleted the account and instead created a similar IMAP account, thinking that this wouldn't download the messages, so shouldn't use as much of the phone's memory.  However, I then realised that I still couldn't delete all old messages, and worse still, that if I did delete any they would be removed from the server so not accessible via other means (e.g. Outlook on my PC).  I therefore decided to delete this new account and instead create a POP3 account identical to the original.

However, the account does not download all messages.  I repeatedly tried to sync all messages.  Each time it might only sync around 30, and they were old mesages, dated around 2013 (interesting that they weren't the oldest, nor the newest).  After eventually downloading about 300 messages Aquamail stopped reading any more messages for this account.  The other accounts are working correctly, and I can send messages through the main account, but I can't receive any more.  I have checked my server via internet access and confirmed that all 8,000 messages are still there.

Any suggestions?

"the possibility of reaching the memory size limits on the phone"

With the default settings, AquaMail keeps 250 recent messages on the device, per folder, and trims the excess automatically.

You will still see the actual server message count in the app's UI, but that doesn't mean that they've all been downloaded to the phone and are stored there (my Gmail account has > 20,000 messages in a few folders each... not an issue).

Regarding message order -- IMAP spec requires any new messages to be added to the "top" of the message list, but if you've been moving a lot of messages between folder and/or uploaded old messages (say, after switching your email provider), this can change the server side message order.

The settings adjustment posted by Paris Geek is the right thing to do here.

Thanks, Paris Geek.  Following your recommendation I have reverted back to IMAP.  However, there is an oddity regarding message numbers:

Aquamail displays against the Inbox 5905/10984 in bold.  This suggests that there are 10984 messages in the inbox of which 5905 are unread.  However, if I open the inbox there are no unread messages (I have confirmed this by sortng with unread messages first).  Furthermore, When I look at my account through my ISP's website there are only 8156 in the inbox.

The fact that it always indicates that there are unread messages, even when there aren't, means I don't know when new messages are received unless I open the inbox, when I can see them in bold

First, I really recommend marking all messages as "read" via web mail, this will speed up mail sync somewhat.

Second, the numbers showing in AquaMail's UI are as reported by the mail server (IMAP), the app does not try to play Nostradamus.

As for the discrepancy, perhaps your web mail shows the number of *conversations* not individual messages? Gmail is like that, perhaps others are following suit?

Yes, you are right, the web server shows the number of conversations, not the number of messages.  if I delete a conversation the number shown on the web decrements by one and the number on Aquamail decrements by the number of messages in that conversation.

For some reason the oldest messages showed on the webserver as unread.  I have marked them all as read on the webserver and Aquamail now shows no unread messages.  However, if I receive a new message both Aquamail and the webserver show it as unread.  If I read it on Aquamail the webserver still shows it as unread,  so it is not a global rule that unread messages on the webserver are also reported by Aquamail

"If I read it on Aquamail the webserver still shows it as unread"

This one is weird.

Normal for POP3 which doesn't provide read/unread state sync, but then the app showing almost 6000 unread in the past made me think you're using IMAP...

Can you check what you've got in AquaMail for this account, IMAP or POP3? Long press the account -> options and folders -> you'll see either IMAP options or POP3 options.

If it's IMAP, then it *should* sync "mark read" back to the server...

...and I can investigate if you capture the issue in the app's debug log, with "raw session data" (please see below).
