as the topic said, why only Outlook (Hotmail) IMAP realtime push doesn't work?

Yeah I've read some similar topic, and there are notes that Problem is not about the app, but instead Microsoft itself, that doesn't solved that problem.

I've tried the "Gmail" or any other email available in playstore (such as maildroid,K-9, typemail, and a lot) apps, which also don't work for the Outook (Hotmail) IMAP realtime push too.

However, when I tried with using "Microsoft Outlook" itself, it does work, which doesn't surprise me as I said above that I saw the old topic talked about how Microsoft doesn't let other email app to be working with the "IMAP" idle realtime push.

Strangely, I've tried the ORIGINAL "Email" app on my "Samsung phone" using the same Outlook account that I have tried on AquaMail, Gmail, and any other email apps. And guess what, It WORKs,, hey the "IMAP" (idle) realtime push does WORK correctly.

This is what I've done testing how it works
I've tried sending email to my Outlook account and see which email apps that I've installed will really work for the Outlook (Hotmail) IMAP realtime push, and out of 10+ email apps on my phone (including AquaMail & Gmail app), there are only 2 email apps that really give me the "INSTANT IMAP push", which are "Microsoft Outlook" itself & Original pre-installed "Email" on "Samsung phone".

So again, as I read Old topic here that state EXCEPT "Microsoft Outlook" itself, there are no ways to make Outlook (Hotmail) IMAP realtime push to work with other email apps, but how Original pre-installed "Email" on "Samsung phone" works correctly for Outlook email account then?

I'm so sure that there must be a way to make AquaMail or any other email apps to work with Outlook IMAP realtime push, otherwise Original pre-installed "Email" on "Samsung phone" should not be able to deal with this problem, IF Microsoft (Outlook) ONLY reserve this function for "Microsoft Outlook" itself.

So please find a way to make the Outlook email account work for IMAP realtime push, so I can use this great AquaMail app alone, otherwise I have to use both "AquaMail" for Gmail and other email provide AND Original pre-installed "Email" on "Samsung phone" JUST only for "Outlook" email accounts. This is really inconvenient that i have to use both where it should be best If I can access (get to notified using IMAP realtime push) all my email accounts on "AquaMail", and that's it.

Hope you can figure it out how to make "Outlook IMAP realtime push" really soon. pleaseee   :'(

BTW, Thank you so much for making this great email apps, Plenty of Customize that I can make it suitable for my taste, and of course as far as I can see, the Dev of this email app has NEVER stopped implementing new features & fixing any bugs he/we found/report.

CHEERs!!!

Thanks for the link, mikeone
Ahhh, I've just have a look your given link, yeah, that explains something  :-[

It's a shame, it looks like IMAP realtime push for Outlook email account may still not be able to implement finally (at least for now).

So I have 2 workaround solutions

1)Use both email apps (AquaMail & Samsung Email) while waiting for the good news happen one day
2)Maybe i can just use AquaMail, but have to turn on the "special settings" for "Outlook" accounts and decrease the "Mail check interval". However, I've tried it on 5 minutes, and that eats battery a lot.

Is there any workaround for this issue, at least for the AquaMail, as I need some how the app to notify me as soon as they can when new messages arrive to my Outlook accounts & do not drain batter as much as it should. Otherwise, the 1st option (use both email apps) is still a better choice for me.

Cheers!!

Push mail is an optional part of the IMAP spec, the technical term is IMAP IDLE.

Supported by:

Gmail, Fastmail, GMX, AOL (yes, they're still around), almost all web hosting companies, "run your own web / mail server" setups, etc. Even by Microsoft Exchange, when used over IMAP.

Not supported by:

Yahoo, Hotmail.

For push mail, Hotmail supports ActiveSync, but I can't use it because of licensing requirements.

@Kostya Vasilyev,

I do understand that there are licensing requirements that you would need to comply with to get push mail for Outlook.com but how are the other apps doing it such Bluemail, Samsung stock mail, Cloudmagic, even iOS stock app!? Is there something you could borrow from these apps and implement on Aquamail.

PS I liked Aquamail so much that I bought the Pro license Key...I really wish I could have the push functionality for Outlook.com

Yeah, sure, I can just "borrow" from Bluemail's code, the code which runs remotely on their web servers.

And I'm sure they'll be happy about it too, since their code is not open / available anywhere -- so they'll say "thank you for cracking our app's code, it will now enjoy the freedom it deserves".

Please contact me at kmansoft / gmail with your order number and I will refund / cancel.

At the same time, why not contact Microsoft support -- yes, Microsoft, the company which runs Hotmail -- and ask them "hey guys, how come your IMAP server doesn't support the industry standard for push mail, IMAP IDLE?"

@Kostya,

I'm sorry I didn't intend to start an argument nor am I asking for a refund on the license. Hell, I don't need a refund for a great app and I'm happy to have paid for it.

Nevertheless, I have found a work around to get push emails on outlook.com which involves forwarding to gmail and using alias for sending emails...this solves the problem until such time Micro$oft implements IMAP Idle.

Oh btw, I'd have better chances of winning $1 million lottery than barking up Micro$oft's tree to get IMAP Idle implemented  ::)

Yes, Gmail with an identity (alias) is good workaround.

There was a time when Hotmail didn't support IMAP at all.

And then they did it.

And six months or so later they made some enhancements (just not IDLE).

---

Sorry about "the argument", it's just that from my point of view, all mail services are the same -- they're just "out there" and it's up to them what they implement (or not), and how serious they are about it.

I do understand that from a users point of view, it's "we just want it to work", regardless... and this is where a "gap" exists...
