Scheduled mail checking stopped working

(Kostya - hope you're feeling better!)

Things were working ok for the first week or so, I had my phone set to check for new messages every 15 minutes (imap disabled). But for some strange reason, it stopped working. Rebooted phone, same problem. Manual checks work, I'm getting messages that way, but it will not work with scheduled checks.

Any ideas why ? Current app settings:

scheduled mail checing = enabled
use wifi only = disabled
enable IMAP push = disabled
system settings = observe all
mail check interval = 15 mins
custom check  = not specified

time ref = 12:00
settle in day = none
wifi in sleep = enabled

sync events = the app resuming
min time between 2 syncs = 30 mins

Hi,

Since the "system settings" setting is set to "observe all", could you either change this (as a test), or check the device's "master sync kill switch" in system settings under "accounts and sync"?

Also, please long press the account, choose "Options and Folders", and make sure that scheduled mail checks aren't disabled there.

Hi Kostya - glad to see you back and feeling better.

Yes, the device's master auto-sync was disabled. I don't recall having done that, but anything is possible. So I simply changed AquaMail sys settings to 'even when auto-sync is off' and it's working now. Thanks!

So basically...in order to control mobile carrier data usage, I can leave auto-sync or background data disabled on the device, but let AquaMail bypass those settings, so at least the emails will continue to come in?

I know you have much catching up (and bloody spam to clean)...but when you have a chance....I was wondering which method of fetching mail would be more data friendly (including background data)  when I am on a roaming network -  pull via pop, or imap? @AC3 -- using the override to control other apps, but keep AquaMail running on a schedule is exactly what that setting is for.

Hi Kostya,

first of all the App is amazing, i am very tempting to use it as it has many options i need but i have a similar issue as the OP.

my phone settings are when screen off, to disable Wifi, Disable Sync, and to use 2G data.

my Aqua Mail settings, was IMAP, sys settings 'even when auto-sync is off'

when i use Aqua Mail on IMAP ( i like to get my e-mail on time) i am getting my mails ok whether screen on or off, but i also get a huge amount of wakelocks about 600 wakelock in 10 hours which i never getting it using the Gmail App, is there anyway to reduce the number of wakelocks?? maybe some options in settings could do the trick???

then i disabled the IMAP and used scheduled mail checking every 15 mins, in order to reduce the wakelocks and to keep using the wonderful Aquamail, but unfortunately i am not getting my email unless my screen is on, although my sys settings is 'even when auto-sync is off'

i would really appreciate your help in my issue in order to get back to aqua mail, thanks in advance

Hi,

First, regarding the number of wake locks.

The device's battery usage stats in system settings is a more practical metric. I mean, holding a wake lock in the app -- or letting the system do it for you (as I suspect is the case for apps that plug into the system's account list) -- I don't really see a difference.

Second, Gmail push over IMAP is very expensive. IMAP push is expensive on its own, but with Gmail it's worse, because their IMAP IDLE implementation is incomplete (known since 2007, no plans to fix). The native Gmail app is very tightly integrated into the system, and use its own network protocol.

I wouldn't recommend having more than 1-2 folders in push mode for Gmail, maybe 3-4 if the stars align right (connectivity, the device's battery size, usage patterns, etc.)

Third, for the scheduled mail checks not working -- I could investigate if you recorded a debug log, capturing a few hours of the app's being in the background with the screen off.

Last but not least, if your WiFi system settings are to enable when the screen is on, disable when the screen is off -- consider trying AquaMail's built-in setting to establish WiFi connections for scheduled mail checks from sleep mode.

Just enable it in the app's settings (extended mode, under "Synchronization settings", labeled "WiFi in sleep mode", defaults to off).

thanks a lot for taking the time to analyze my problem, i will give it a try and see how it will go, if the wifi sleep things can do the trick then no need for the report, actually it would be good to have my wifi on for some seconds while screen off so other apps can sync as well, i tried a solution for that and could not find, but totally forget that aqua mail can do it for me :)
