Please enable "IMAP Push" in AquaMail settings:
> go to main window (Account list view) > menu button > Settings > Mail, receiving > scroll down to "IMAP push" > Enable the first option.

PS:
You mentioned "Mail check interval". Remember that this option is just for "Scheduled sync". The shorter the interval, the higher the battery usage.
I recommend to set this back to the default (= 15 min). This should be sufficient for most of the users.

In addition to my previous post please check settings for each account:

> go to main window (Account list view) > Account Settings (long press on Account name) > Options and folders > Account options > enable the third option "IMAP push".

Repeat this for each account.

In addition to Mikeone's excellent answer, please note that some (rare) servers do not support Imap Push. In that case, no immediate email reception is possible.

The "5-minutes-issue" is not related to "IMAP Push" which I mentioned in my posts.
Please check your settings again carefully.

Can you please check further settings for specific account folders (e.g. Inbox):

> go to Account list view  > Account settings (long press on Account name) > Options and folders > Folders > tap on folder (e.g. Inbox) > enable "Sync (plain folder)" > you went back to the folder list > tap on folder's "Setting wheel" on the right side > Enable "Use IMAP Push" > OK

> repeat this for each folder you like to get immediate push notifications for received messages.

To OP -- is this an Exchange account?

Sorry, Aqua does not support push mail for Exchange, only for IMAP accounts.

I'm not sure right now if there is a specific setting directly in your Gmail account (Web client) necessary to enable IMAP push (IMAP Idle) on the server side.

Please long press the account -> options and folders -> folders.

Make sure it says IMAP Push under Inbox

If not, tap the "settings" icon to the right of the folder, and enable it.
