5.0 broke mark as read feature in notifications

When I upgraded to android 5.0 I lost the ability to mark mail notifications as read in the notification pull down. Will this feature be fixed?

No you didn't.

Android may collapse "rich" notifications, hiding the action buttons.

Please swipe down on the notification to see it in full glory, with message text preview (if any) and action buttons.

Screenshots. The red arrows indicate swiping down on the notification.

As far as I can tell, Android expands the first (top) notification only... and the order is pretty much random.
