Are messages downloaded
« on: March 31, 2015, 07:11:57 pm »
I am new to Aqua mail and this forum, so I apologise if this is a daft question, but here goes, do messages get downloaded to my android tablet so that I can look at existing messages when i have no connection.
The reason i'm asking this is because, when I launch Aqua mail it goes to the top of the inbox and if I scroll down I soon come to a point where I get the "Loading" message. I have just used this app at home, where I have wifi so I am not sure what is going on inside Aqua Mail.

Yes, the messages are downloaded, but...
1) The number of messages downloaded is limited to the number configured in the settings (I believe, it is 100 messages by default)
2) Messages are purges beyond certain number (I believe 250 by default) and age (2 weeks?) - those options are also configurable.
3) Long messages may not be fully loaded, especially when on mobile network. Rather only first [?]kB (1?) is loaded. Again, this is configurable.
4) Attachments may or may not be loaded. It is configurable.
In particular, IIRC, you can specify to preload attachments on Wi-Fi.

There might be some other cases, and Kostya will probably add to that list.

From what you described, I believe your are experiencing #1. If you need more messages loaded, increase that number in the Settings -> [General] Messages to sync -> [it goes up to 5000]

Hope this helps.

One minor thing to nitpick with your otherwise good answer...

I've never seen and can't find an option for purge by age.  I have mail from at least 2009 on my phone.

Only similar thing to purge by age is a setting to purge/not purge locally stored mail no longer on the server.

But...maybe I'm missing something...

Because there isn't one :)

>> I have mail from at least 2009 on my phone.

This should have happened only in an account that has had very little mail since then -- so the first N (N = 25 by default, or as adjusted in the account's settings) actually covers that long.

So either it's not a typical scenario, or something the user wanted (e.g. sync 1000 messages or whatever, not the default 25).

Just one correction:

>> 1) The number of messages downloaded is limited to the number configured in the settings (I believe, it is 100 messages by default)

25 by default, and since 1.5.1, the default for Android 5.0+ is 50.

Mea culpa.

I must have changed those values from the default ones.
Earlier today, I tried to look briefly through the settings and didn't see the age-related setting. I must have mixed it up with the stock (Motorola) e-mail app.

I am glad I didn't mix things up in the rest.

Exactly.  That is a fairly low-traffic account and I do have it set to sync 1000 messages (I need to for this special account).

Can you please explain the differnece between sync setting under "common"(by number, max.5000) and "account" (choose time dependend or number). I guess, common is the defaul for account, but wha do common settings not allow time depency ?

In my case I would like to have all Gmail In and Sent from one year (I dont have much traffic, it might be 500 conversations, each having 5 messages on average)

The app level setting is used by default, unless you choose an account level override.

There is not "1 year" time based setting, but in your case, selecting, let's say, 500 at the account level should be fine.

Note that the larger the value, the more work the app has to do.

Don't choose something like "1000" + "mail sync every 5 minutes" or "IMAP push mail"...

THX for your super fast and nice reply !
- why do common settings not also allow time dependency ?

- So it is checking all e.g. 500 on every sync intervall.
- How long would that roughly take beeing on UMTS.
- I automatically switch data on for 1 minute every 20 minutes on my SM-T705, 4.4.2. What would happen if the app is in the mid of a sync. Woul the app keep on trying an consume more power this way ?

Because app level settings apply, by default, to all accounts / account types. POP3 doesn't have a way to query the server for messages by date range.

>>  How long would that roughly take beeing on UMTS

I can't tell you. Try it.

With many mail servers, the app is able to quickly detect that there are no changes in the whole account, or folder by folder -- assuming there are no changes.

And then, once it has to go forward and do actual work -- mail servers / services vary by performance *a lot*.

>> Woul the app keep on trying an consume more power this way

No, the current network connections (sync in progress) will be forced closed by the system, and that's going to be it.
