Using pop3 email list frequently is empty

I use both pop3 and imap4 on different devices of course, to read my yahoo email. I use imap for devices always conneted (via wifi) and pop3 for my mobile which frequently cannot contact ant server.  My mobile is set for a manual sync only and my yahoo account frequently has over 5000 emails in it.
Yet my mobile using pop3 frequently has an empty list of emails and the total email does not match my account. I use pop3 deliberately so that i dont need to be in contact with a server to read my email, this is why we have pop3, the ability to read emai off line.  Why does Aqua "drop" emaik?

Thanks guys for the help and screen shots.
I've decided to give Imap4 a go on my mobile... I didn't realise it would cache that much using IMAP4 - and Imap4's security is another reason to switch.  I'll give it a go and will measure the impact on my mobile allowance which by the way is decreasing from 20G to 5GB per month.  My use is usually under 1GB but that was using Pop3 and using secure Wifi where possible.
