Scheduled Checks

Here's a dumb question ... but what is the alternative to Scheduled Checks?  If I don't have that enabled, will I only get new messages if I manually refresh my inbox?

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'm trying to find an alternative to the stock email app for my work email.  I think it uses active sync.  I've already seen that Aqua doesn't support that ... how much does Aqua affect battery life, if Scheduled Checks is set for the minimum 5 minutes?
