Did you specify an userid and password for your SMTP server?
Depending on the configuration of your SMTP server, sending an email to a domain different then the domain your email address is from is blocked when you are not authenticated with an userid and password. You can test that when you send an email to yourself (or someone else that is an the same server). That message will most probably get send.
If you send a message to a SMTP server that is addressed to someone on another domain is called relaying.
Example :
Your mail adres is user1@gmail.com and want to send a message to user2@hotmail.com then that is relaying. If you send a message to user3@gmail.com it is not being relayed.
The reason that you have to be authenticated to the SMTP server is that otherwise everyone can use the server to send messages to other mail domains and that can be used to send spam and is called an "open relay". And an open relay is a very big NONO.
