Sending email to self

Not sure how to describe this....

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S4

Sometimes I send an email to myself, with attachments, say images, text etc, basically so that I have a copy on my phone

However, once sent, obviously i have one in the sent folder and one in the inbox, however, if I delete either one of them, both are deleted...

Save to sent folder after sending is disabled, but I presume that is for sending to other people

I think the issue here is that the email is classed as one

Forgot to say, using imap, both personal address and gmail

It is like the app is classing both as the same, regardless of whether I delete the one in the inbox or sent folder, both are deleted

Hi,

I'm actually sending the email directly to myself.

Due to a slight issue, photos where deleted on the gmail account when they should have been moved into folders, so I am having to send them to myself from my laptop, and them resaving them on the ipad if that makes sense. But keeping a email copy just incase the ipad and gmail decide to go nuts again.

But I see what you are saying, going into Options and Folders, then Composing and Sending, and then ticking Save Sent Messages

Once the email is sent, a copy is saved into the sent folder, but when deleting the one in the inbox after finishing with it, it goes into the deleted folder, but when you delete/purge the deleted emails, the one in the sent folder remains, I can then move the one in the sent folder into another folder

Not sure what can be done to be honest, have just sent myself an email on the ipad, does the same thing

Just to be clear, separating this post to make it easier for others who have the same issue.

From what you are saying, because gmail is using labels, a email in multiple folders uses no extra space

So a email in the inbox, as well as sent, important, saved folders etc is actually just one email and is using no extra space

Nevermind, under account options, remove deleted messages got unticked.....

Unfortunately, purging the deleted/trash/bin folder also removes the other one

I.e. I send an email to myself, shows up in both inbox and sent, on the desktop web browser, i removed the inbox tag and added a save tag, for some reason, on my phone galaxy s4 and ipad i can not edit the tags

the email shows up with the save tag, but deleting still deletes the email in the sent folder and vice versa

I think this can only be sorted out by gmail themselves, and I doubt they will as I think it will be a major overhaul, plus storing the emails as separate emails would increase the storage used/required

The only way around this as far as I can see is to send the email to another account and then send it back so gmail classes it as separate email

To Gmail's back end (storage), a message exists as a single entity "tagged with" one or more folders (which they call labels).

Moving a message to Gmail/Trash ([Deleted]) in Aqua will remove it from all "labels" (folders).

However... Their IMAP server treats "Delete immediately" (in Aqua parlance) without moving to Deleted first as "remove the current label / folder, keep all others".

Despite the "dire" warning in Aqua, that's what it does. It's part of their IMAP server's peculiar logic.

I've not tried it with Sent messages, but have tried with messages that have multiple incoming type labels (folders). Maybe that's something you could try and see if it works with Sent the same way.

Have tried using multiple folders, still the same

Guess I'll have to live with it, after all it isn't every day I send email to myself and with tons of users using gmail, it hasn't been a issue for those users

It was only because my contract for my domain was coming up, and with everyone in the family using google and their apps, I decided to not to renew so had to update websites, apps etc

I've created a second gmail account, sending back and forth works fine without the above issue, as long as the recipient gmail address isn't the same as the sender, then all is well

But I'll keep playing around, and if I find a better workaround that doesn't require a second email account, I'll post it here

To step back a bit:

Gmail's SMTP server always saves any messages sent through it. They will show in Aqua after the next sync (so at most 15 minutes with the default settings).

These will also be available in web mail / on the mail server, and Aqua will be able to pull them down if you scroll the Sent folder further and further down (if you're looking for an old message). In addition, server search also works in Sent folder.

Given the above, I'm not sure I understand the need to send messages to yourself....

I use imap so that all my devices can access the emails, or I can login to view them on other devices/machines

The sending emails to self is because  i wanted a load of photos on my ipad on my phone, so sending them on my ipad to my phone
