Custom Folders
« on: December 28, 2012, 05:07:37 am »
Kostya,

OK, this is a BIG request, I know. But as they say, if you don't ask....

Smart Inbox = Terrific. Love it. What I'd really like though is custom folders based on some sort of filter.

Think of it as a simplistic version of Search Folders on Outlook. Granted I know AM isn't a full fledged desktop email app, but a simple version of this would be nice. Perhaps a custom folder where you can select which folders to display, read/unread status and perhaps a date range.

I can't even begin to imagine how big your current workload is, so I'm not holding my breath, but it would be super-sweet!

Thanks!

Rachel

Rachel,

Thank you for the feedback.

My recommendation is to use server side folders (IMAP), configure message filtering there, and set up the account in my app to sync those folders.

A big benefit of this approach is that your messages will be organized the same way everywhere - in your desktop mail apps at home and at the office, my app, web mail...

You're absolutely right that the heart of the issue is the constraints under which a mobile app has to operate (traffic, data storage). Even though there are more and more uses with tablets, I can't ignore users with less powerful devices.

Kostya,

You're right, server side filters would be a method of resolving this. However there is something I think might be feasible on your end to help implement this better and that's to force some Folders to appear on top of the folder list, after the Smart Inbox.

K9 has a feature I believe called 'Always show at top' that is similar to this. Personally I have no objection how the folders were subsequently ordered, just that they'd be readily available without hunting down through a large number of accounts and folders (I have 5 emails accounts currently).

e.g.

Smart Inbox
My Tasks
Social Meeting Emails
Account #1
Inbox
[Deleted Messages]
Account #2
Inbox
Financial
Friends
My Tasks
[Deleted Messages]
Account #3
Inbox
Social Meeting Emails
[Deleted messages]

So in the above example, there are two folders which are shown under the Smart Inbox, one from Account #2 and one from Account #3

Would that be possible?

Thanks!

Rachel.  I don't know if you are a gmail users but how I have forced order on folders, server-side, is to prefix them with a number.  That will allow you to have at the top, the folders you desire.  Hope the suggestion may help.

Rachel -- thank you for the suggestion.

The rationale is clear to me, to be able to access certain folders quickly.

I'll be working on improvements to folder navigation in the not so distance future (so I hope), will keep this in mind.
