Apologies if this is already the way it works, or configurable.
I would not like any of the emails in my inbox to disappear over time. I curate my inbox myself, so the only messages in it are there because they need to be there.

So it would be rad if the Smart Inbox just showed me the contents of all my inboxes. Basically an option to make the time period "forever"?
I am scared of the time when messages start to disappear :P

Good suggestion, but can you clarify something:

Are you using IMAP or POP3? The reason I ask is that for IMAP, only a limited number of messages is kept up to date (and shown when you open a folder's message list).

Hi Kostya,
I'm using IMAP. I don't usually have months-old messages in my inbox, but I'd like to be able to see all messages if possible?
Alternatively, an option to show "only unread and starred" (but from any time period) would be nice :)

Thanks for being so attentive with development and with this forum!

Edit: I messed up, see below

OK, I think I must be doing something wrong. I'm just rebooting in case...
I've found this afternoon that most of my older messages keep disappearing from the Smart Inbox. When I go into my main IMAP inbox, it seems to re-sync and download them again, and then I can see them until either something unspecified happens or a new email comes in, at which time it may revert to just showing the last few unread.

I've tried various difference settings for the Smart Inbox - well, either only unread or 1 week - and I'm not sure they make a difference. It seems more related to what AquaMail thinks is in my IMAP inbox.

I only have at most 6-8 unread and 2 starred emails in there, at the oldest from mid-November. It'd be nice to just have them kept there, and the Smart Inbox showing me whatever is there in my mailboxes. Is this possible?
THANKS!

ETA: My apologies, I've solved this (sortof).
Postbox has inherited from Thunderbird a problem with its own smart inbox ("All Accounts") with IMAP servers, where when you file messages, it clears them display, but does not actually expunge them. So my inbox had perhaps dozens of deleted but unexpunged emails in it.
This must have gone over AquaMail's threshold for storing mail, even though it too was not showing the deleted messages. Having expunged my inbox, the widget and mailbox are now working as expected.

Good suggestion

I'd like to second this, please. That would make the Smart Inbox operate more like the Unified Inbox on K9 which would please my wife up no end (might even get her to buy a Pro Key as I did!).

Thanks!

If you do this and could also add a toggle that rotates through three e-mail views (all, unread, starred) - that would be great.

This version adds an "All current" option to the smart list time period setting:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.2.1-pre5.apk

Note that this doesn't mean that all server messages or even all cached messages will be shown -- for IMAP accounts/folders, it'll show only those that the app saw during the most recent mail check and knows to be up to date.

There is no time limit though, as requested.

Seeing the unread or starred messages in this list is only a couple of taps away - Menu / Unread first or Menu / Starred first, as before.

Awesome, Kostya - thanks heaps!

Embarrassingly, though, I have kind of gotten used to the "Unread only" setting, in conjunction with showing starred messages.
I like being able to see all messages including unread within the app, but I'd really love to be able to have a different setting for the widget. There, it makes more sense to me to show only unread and starred messages!

I know this would add complication to the settings, but it would be the perfect compromise for me!

There can never be too many checkboxes or dropdown lists :)

I'll put it on my list. Just need to organize the app's settings screens better -- the flat list doesn't really work anymore, even with the two modes (basic/extended)...

Excellent. Yes, I agree, the settings screen at the moment is a bit hard to get through.
Thanks for considering this.

Do you remember I told you so... :P

Grouping in:
Accounts: sync settings, start sync on events, smart inbox
UI: user interface, message list, message display, composing and sending, contacts integration, search
Notifications: message notifications, error notifications, night mode, weekend mode
Advanced: security, network, wifi, mobile, debug

could do and would help finding settings as now it's quite confusing.
