Deleting emails
« on: July 29, 2014, 10:11:40 pm »
I use POP3 to access my email. My desire is to never have Aquamail delete any messages from my POP3 mailbox. I would say that by preference I'd like to have email moved to a Deleted or Trash folder on my device when I delete them.

I have that mostly set up, but I have a couple of questions related to using this on a Nexus 5:

1) When reading an email, there is no button to delete an email from what I can tell. There is a "Delete Now" button in the menu. That gets old fast; I'd rather have a delete and move to a Deleted folder that can never affect the POP3 server.

2) So I went to the message list and multi-selected some emails and used the menu to delete. I discovered "Delete Immediately" deletes from the mail server (the messages deleted were not important); I assume that selecting Move to Deleted would have created a folder and moved the items in there?

So, my questions are:

a) how can I delete a message (on the device only) from the message reader pane?
b) And will that move to a Deleted folder or what?
c) And also, is there a way to de-fang deleting from the message list so I can't manage to delete email from my POP3 mailbox?

Overall, I'd like to read email, deleting to a Deleted folder, both from the message list and the message reading pane. Eventually I'd empty or clean out that Deleted folder, having no effect on the POP3 server. I desire this because I read email during the day on my phone/tablet and then archive a "permanent" copy on my desktop (cleaning out the POP3 inbox). I'd like the items on the phone to not disappear when the POP3 mailbox is cleared, however.

Thanks,

Gary Berg

Paris,

So there is no way to delete/"hide" a message from the message pane without using the menu? No trash can icon like almost every other email app in existence has?

OK, I've got my "trashcan" icon it just looks different. The eye with an "X" can be considered a "hide" button in my case. Once I figured out how to tell it to go to the next email when I use it at the message viewing window, it works pretty well.

Now if I understand you correctly, if I tell it to hide them they stay around "forever", but are not accessible to me in AM? I'd really rather not set up to have it delete stuff from AM when it is deleted on the server, as that means I can't decide to hang on to a message for a while (a message I don't delete on my device). Since I'm connecting POP3, my desktop will clear the mailbox daily.

The automatic removal is scheduled for every night, around 2-3 am (just when I'm finishing catching up on the forum, lol ).

Aqua keeps a certain number of messages around, per folder, trimming the rest, including hidden messages. The default is 250. Can be changed per account, in "options and folders", the setting is labeled "messages to cache".
