prevent AquaMail's "update available" popup?
« on: September 10, 2013, 02:55:11 pm »
I know the dev couldn't have been so asinine as to force users to keep dismissing an unwanted popup notifying them that there's an update to AquaMail available, as I've had to do several times today. That's because users can have the Play store automatically update the app, and the update will come around soon enough, making an in-app popup unbelievably annoying to users who don't want it. But I can't find a setting to opt out of this obtrusive popup that always comes exactly when you want to get quickly to an email. Does anyone know the setting to remove this annoyance, which I've never seen in any other app I've used? It's unfortunate that the dev automatically opts us in, but this could be easily fixed if I could find the setting that turns off such an inappropriate "feature."

I guess your version is from PayPro, correct?

Tap the "later" button in the update popup to make it go away for 24 hours.

I'm not *forcing* anyone to update, but doesn't everyone want running "latest and greatest" these days?

PS -- Does the word "asinine" comes from "ass"?

If so, which one, the animal or the body part?

Please enlighten.

That's right. You're nagging the user to manually update even when the user has already specified automatic update in the Play store.

"Asinine" is a more polite way to say "foolish" or "unintelligent." As I said, I use Google Play Store to update apps. I've never heard of "PayPro." Popping up a nag every 24 hours is exactly what I'm complaining about: because Play store updates just fine, a nag is always obtrusive and perfectly engineered to come up exactly when you most hate it. Let us power users opt out of the nag and use Play store to update our apps automagically.

From the animal. Originally from latin. Like an ass.
Ass is only a body part in 'american' English, and in those places whose english is based on american english. Numerically more than British English speakers. It probably migrated back to Europe recently via pop culture.
The British English for the body part is probably from German (OK, Anglo Saxon) and is "arse''. Cf. German "Arsch".
English seems to be gradually adopting the american spelling because of its wide use in humour (humor if you must) and popular music, but as an older person, I am slower to adopt such changes!

As I have the pro key anyway, I am not bothered by the popups, but I would probably not be anyway, as I only update when I want to. The status bar at top left on my tablet prompts me when an update or many updates are available. For people with slow connection, or flakey ones away from home, a limited 3g data plan, etc., I think this is a good compromise. I update either just before I put the tablet on the charger, or as I get it off the charger.
BTW, I feel that if a 'free' product has a paid option then a daily reminder that you are not putting bread in the creator's mouth is a very small price to pay. There is in fact no such thing as a free lunch. For many 'free' software products, the real product is ------- you! I am thinking here of search engines, browsers and server-based office soft ware.

I have the pro key. It would have been asinine to assume that I didn't.

This not a "please give me your money" nag screen. Not at all.

There isn't one in AquaMail, only the promo signature (which I believe is an even smaller price to pay, and a much, much smaller price to pay than full-blown in-app adverts would be... I get several messages from mobile ad companies a day, and they all go into my Spam folder).

This is an update notification, and is only shown in the app itself because it's the "direct download" version, for devices without Google Play.

Two things:

- The "later" button now makes the notification go away for three days, not one.

- Installing the newest Google Play flavored build (1.2.5.3) from below link will reset the notification, and you will get an update notice later from Google Play, not in the app.

Thanks. I also hope there will never be a ratings nag. I would love to rate Aqua Mail and other apps as I used to, but I don't ever want to join Google+. In that case, some devs provide a permanent ratings nag that forever pressures the user to join Google+ to make it go away.

There already is a "brag on G+" button, but it's "well hidden" on the about screen. I've only ever seen one or two people use it.
