I think the corner colours were fine. In the first version of the app I used, only about 4 colours were available. Making more available would be good, but I think colouring the messages or even the account titles has mixed advantages and disadvantages.
Corner colour:
can colour account names, folders and message headers with even strong colours, with no readability problems - plus point.
Needs at least some space. Minus point on tiny screens. Only a 'tiny' minus.
If too small, can be hard to distinguish colour on small screen. Change your spectacles!
Subtle shade differences less visible. ???? Neutral - choose different colours.

Background colour:
Dark colours make readability difficult in some cases. Even swapping foreground to white is problematic for some colours. Minus point.
Account names or folders in background, message headers by corner colour. Still has readability problem, but does not extend to message header or beyond. Plus/minus.
Ugly. Minus point. (For a good appearance, use colour and fonts sparingly).

Giving the choice (corner or background or both). Complexity - minus point. I like it that AM seems reliable on my tablet and prefer it to stay that way.

Wider palette than on earlier versions. Plus point.

Creeping features - where is this going - do we have coloured contacts too for business/pleasure? Minus point. A stable product that does first what is 'needed' gets my vote.
I don't have colours on my Thunderbird installation on PC, and don't miss them there.

@beaky

but a subtle color coding is worthwhile. the sample color in the screenshots is just one example. that's what the Color Picker. Header background and Account list - Folder view, used or did not use it for small screens the Color Picker.

and for the serious businessman can choose the Color Picker also gray.

I've got a task somewhere in my to-do to provide more colors for folders (not an entirely simple task, actually -- right now most colors are picked automatically based on folder database IDs, and just adding more will shift the automatically picked colors for everyone).

I believe the current account coloring approach makes accounts stand out, which is double plus good in itself. A setting to apply the picked account color to all its folders is also on my to-do (it would use the "corner" indicator, just like now).

The color picker lets you pick one of the "popular" colors and and then adjust its color intensity in the color wheel.

PS: @Andre - wouldn't "the"serious businessman" pick "the color which represents the spirit of innovation", what would that be, electric blue? :)

@Andre -- I've looked at your proposal...

I guess you'd like to switch the color accent indicators between account items and folder items (entire background vs. corner indicator).

Not sure I like it so far. I believe accounts should visually stand out more than folders, if at all.

I'm also not sure users will appreciate per-folder color indicators being -- radically -- different. People get used to how things are.

Hey, can I attach a screenshot too? Never thought I'd like account colors, but I do (enough for one of my devices).

I think the current situation of different colors (accounts and folders) seems very good. Aquamail should not look like a Christmas tree ...  ::)

I'm getting confused, too many Andrés! :)

To be honest, I personally see no real advantage to colouring the Account Lists at all - unless they are the same colour that will be used to flag emails in the Messages List anyway. I rarely (OK, pretty much never) even look at the Accounts List once I've set it up (but then I only have four accounts set up in AquaMail, two of which get very few messages).

I spend most of my time in the Smart Folder, and the current corner-flags just don't seem noticeable enough - and being just at the top edge of one message they can also look very close to the bottom edge of the message above, which can also be easily misinterpreted at a casual glance. This applies even more so to the Widget version.

I had suggested a while back that it would be better if the Message List colours showed as full vertical bars (the whole height of the email item) but when I saw the new coloured background option I thought that would work perfectly within the Smart Folder to better differentiate messages from different accounts; yes, as another poster has said, you'd need to use fairly pastel colours, but not quite sure why that is a problem? It would be great to have that as an option anyway, i.e. Colour Labels, Coloured Backgrounds, or None.

Coloring items in the message list won't work -- the backgrounds are used to differentiate between read/unread messages.

Vertical bars? I don't know, maybe.

But it seems that a narrow vertical bar won't stand out much more than the current corner bits, am I wrong?

@Andrew -- I'm not testing any features right now, busy with a "hotfix" release.

I thought about a vertical bar, too, but if it is the same width as the triangle, it encroaches on the 'tick' mark below it. There is room to change the shape to make the triangle taller, maybe 50 to 100% taller, but I think they look fine on my 10" tablet.
I have coloured the accounts in different hues, but will probably change back to uncoloured, or maybe just use a pale colour to distinguish the account titles from the folder names. If these could be typographically different - such as bold, this would do just as well as colour for me. Having tried colours, they are not so important for me, but the little triangles *are* useful.
Just my two cents.
