Why a third party (external) spell checker?
« on: July 08, 2013, 09:15:12 am »
Instead of using an internal spell checker such as MailDroid Aqua Mail chooses to incorporate an external spell checker, ie. Flipdog's Spell Checker Editor app.

Why is this?

Thanks,
Nylo

PS.  I’m sorry to hear about your health issue.  I do wish you a fast recovery.

As far as i know Flipdog's Spell Checker Editor and MailDroid are from the same developer, so that might be the reason they have it directly incorporated into the mail app.
AquaMail can use the Android system spell checker (Android 4+) as well as the third party spellchecker from Flipdog.
I personal have no need for those as i use Swiftkey keyboard which suggests correct words.

The system own spell checker only from Android 4+ on, external spell checker on all Android versions.

I quote from the AquaMail FAQ which is here http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=227
Quote
Is there a spell checker?
On Android 4, the app can use the spell checker built into the system. You can enable it in the device’s system settings, under Languages and Input. Once this is done, spell checking will be automatically enabled in the compose area.
On all Android versions, the app can work with Spell Checker by FlipDog Solutions, LLC – which is free on Google Play. Once this app is installed, the compose window in mine will have an item in its menu to call the spell checker as an external app.

The reason for this that Mail Droid was already in Google Play when I started working on my app.... So its developer has had a lot of more time to do "stuff", and it shows.

Android 4 has a system spell checker, and finally passed 2.3 this week as the most popular Android version. As time goes on, this will only deepen.

It should be noted that, just like with soft keyboards, it's possible for third party apps to offer system-wide spell check services.

This leaves Android 2.* -- and yes, I just don't have the time to write one, so decided to leverage someone else's work, which he very kindly made available as a separate component.
