Aquamail doesn't really turn off notifications!
« on: June 22, 2013, 11:31:10 pm »
I've supposedly turned off notifications entirely in Aquamail Pro (I get a new batch of emails with every check, mostly spam), and turned off the phone's default mail program's mail checks entirely, but Aquamail Pro still plays the temple bells sound I intially chose before (1) setting it to silent and (2) disabling all notifications, and (3) restarting the phone to make sure my changes took.

I can see that it's Aquamail Pro playing the sound because it's played at the same time that Aquamail Pro posts a message at the top of the screen announcing new emails, and the default program has not gotten any new mails since yesterday, when I installed Aquamail and turned off mail checks in the default program.

With the phone's default mail program, I could limit notifications to "priority senders" (an ability which I'd like you to provide), but in the meantime, if I could really turn off Aquamail's notification sound entirely, I could use the default app just to play me notifications of emails from "priority senders."

The constant notifications of junk emails - even though I've supposedly turned off notifications from both mail programs (and the default program hasn't seen a new email since yesterday) is driving me up the wall, since I use my phone to play music as well!

Well, I shut it up by using the Turn off Sounds on Weekends setting and defining the weekend as Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

It's totally rediculous, of course, that I had to do that, and simply turning off notifications wasn't sufficient!

Now I'll tell the default mail app to check for mail, download only 1.5k per message, and play me notifications of messages from priority senders. Other than the fact that it may get messages before Aquamail does, it should serve.

Please offer a similar feature in Aquamail, and make the turning off of notifications work as advertised.

In general settings who have disabled the notification if i understand correctly?

Have you perhaps also enabled Notification sound in the "Account -> Special settings"? This will over right the default notification settings.

Found it, and turned off silent mode. Unfortunately, I now can't get the default app to make sound!

Please, please, please set up a "priority sender" function to let me list senders that should trigger audible notifications when other notifications are off!

If i understand you right:
You disabled the notification sound in AquaMail it self.
You turned on sound in your cellphone sound configuration.

The notification sound in your stock default email app is absolutely independent from AquaMail! Or did i miss understood you?

Well, I've gotten back audible notification of emails from my friends, family, and business contacts - from the stock email - but that only polls every 15 minutes, and I'll have to spend time emptying its mailbox frequently.

It would really be nice if Aquamail Pro had a similar function so I could have one, not two, mail apps running all the time!

yes would be a nice feature, perhaps you can make a comment in the "Feature wish.." section.
Do not poll less then 15 minutes. Most provider will block the poll access to your account for half an hour if you do so.

I've had AquaMan polling my mailbox at GoDaddy every 5 minutes since last night, and my desktop copy of Thunderbird has been polling it every 5 minutes for the better part of a year, and I've never been locked out. Maybe MS and Google are stricter, having many more accounts, but it doesn't seem to be a problem with small ISPs like GoDaddy and Speakeasy (which I used for years before GoDaddy).

Good for you. I know. Hotmail, and some others restrict when you poll less then 15 minutes with POP3. IMAP is different.

Hotmail has a server side limit for the frequency of logins (every 15 minutes, enforced after a few logins too close in time), but that's just Hotmail.

IMAP is designed for concurrent mailbox access and long-running sessions, so no issue there either.

Now, back to the issue at hand.

- First:

All my devices are configured with "no sound" (sound: "none") in global AquaMail settings, and none of them makes a sound. At all. Not on weekends, not on weekdays, days or nights.

I'm attaching a couple of screenshots.

If those are your settings already, please long press the account, select Special settings, and make sure that you don't have a per-account notifications override ("special" settings -> those that override global ones).

- Second:

I just verified that disabling notifications in global AquaMail settings does disable them.

If there is a per-account "special settings" override, on the other hand... back to previous item.

- Third:

"now can't get the default app to make sound"... judging by your mentioning its priority inbox, and its separate notifications, it sounds like Gmail app (not Email app).

That's a separate app (from mine), has its own notification settings and should not interact / interfere at all with my app, unless -- this is a Gmail account and you've set it up in AquaMail using POP3. If that's the case, please don't use POP3 with Gmail, and let the app's preset configure it using IMAP.

Finally, since you mention Spam - if you set the spam folder to "sync as spam" in AquaMail, the unread messages there won't trigger notifications.
