I am also hoping threaded view comes to Aqua Mail.

That really is a shortcoming with this App, but everything else is done so well that for the moment, its exclusion can be forgiven.
I too find AM to be FAR too good as it is to give up on using it.
I use 3 different platforms for email, not counting the webmail interface to my server. Yes, I miss threading in AM, but it was not always available in Thunderbird for example. If a thread spans so much time I cannot find the beginning or end, I will GOTO my PC and use Thunderbird. (BTW, threading on that gives sometimes different results from threading in other clients).

Maybe I show my age (not quite old enough to remember messengers carrying wax tablets or notes in cleft sticks), but as an early internet user (pre www), my perspective is different.
Microsoft exchange uses one method to identify threads, gmail another. They are not the universe. WHEN Kostya gets a chance to clear his to do list and tackle this, it will not be trivial (as has already been said), but inevitably will sometimes yield different results from other systems, because modelling every system out there in one product gives contradictory results so is necessarily unimplementable. If like me you use different platforms on the same email server, you may spot the subtle differences. Once it does appear, we can only hope the results usually work out 'right'.
On a related topic, I wonder if it is easier to get AM to implement 'in-reply-to', ahead of actually using it to reconstruct threads? I assume that although gmail by itself uses in-reply-to, does this functionality get lost if replying with AM, but through gmail, so threading within native gmail is also degraded?

There are technical reasons why this will not happen any time soon I have been told.

I agree it is really annoying and the reason many will not use this excellent app.

Honestly, in my opinion, threaded view is overrated, what happens when someone changes the subject, or when someone uses a client that does not support keeping the breadcrumb, you get two threads.

In my opinion Search or Filter by Subject/Sender/Receiver is a lot more important than threaded view.
Most other email clients have Search from Sender function while reading an e-mail.  Sadly you cannot specify where to search for, or simply tap on an e-mail and have certain fields searched automatically. This is a bigger and more important feature that is missing, among a few others that would make AM a complete email app that can stand out from the crowd.

I like threaded views, but on a tablet or phone using IMAP  you need to be careful what you wish for, as you may have limited storage, a limited data plan from your provider, and despite the 'instant on' nature of phones, and all the big numbers in the spec sheets, they just don't match PCs for number crunching or text processing speed. I really don't know how much of the task can be done entirely on the server, but I suspect any client designer has to assume the server is relatively dumb. I also think Android forbids any app grabbing more than so much memory (on mine it is 2gig).
If everyone in the conversation has a system that uses in-reply-to, then i think even changing the subject won't break the thread, and I find this is the case with emails from my friends - all of us by coincidence (also) using Thunderbird on various PCs, as well as some tablets and phones, but only I am using AM. so that need not be a problem.
However back to the IMAP issues. A threaded conversation stretching over days, even months, involves referring to emails that are by now only on the server. Performance and data transmission quota issues might arise, as navigating the thread involves going back to the server. Keeping emails on the tablet or phone just because they could be in a thread seems either daft or impossible, as any reply has an in-reply-to.

What I do miss is:
Search, filter or sort by sender, subject, possibly date, and ideally combinations, but I think in Thunderbird you can filter by one or more factor, then sort by another, so it is easy to make up for lack of threaded view (old versions did not have threaded, and I don't use it be default even now).

Like you, I miss being able to tap on the sender column and get emails sorted by sender, the selected one at the top (but again, this would soon be digging back into the server, with limited numbers 'live' on the phone.)
The other day I had to find a set of user credentials sent to me over 6 months ago. I had to turn to my PC, because I had less control over the search in AM, and for some reason, searches on the server return stuff sent 6 months ago right at the end, after everything else. Same broadly on PC as AM, so presumably a server thing**. However, AM did not return the wanted item at all unless I narrowed the search to get fewer hits - although it did return stuff that was nearby in time. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature :-)

So I would say, search by sender, subject, etc in a targeted way comes very comfortably above threaded in my wish list. Filter is also useful, as is sort by subject, sender, and so on. However, you then still are implicitly diving back into the server to find older items.

(** oddly, I thought I had Thunderbird set to download and keep locally 100% of all emails, so I will have to revisit those settings as the behaviour suggests it is still having to access the server, but that's my problem. I need at least one of my devices to survive loss of broadband! )

The only single feature that makes me hesitate to purchase aquamail is threading.   Otherwise a practically perfect email app - love it!

I've read thru the arguments against threading and don't see anything more than excuses.  Other apps on same devices are doing threading well.  If you are dealing with email discussions that go into the 10s of messages then threading is the only way to stay sane.  Please please please add this feature -- SOON!!

Yes. This is must-have feature. I hope Kostya will find free time between 24:00 and 0:00 to code it :D
Do you want to use the latest AquaMail version?
Try AquaMail Updater!

@steve - for me, there is no question that this is a desirable feature for many users.

The only thing stopping me from adding it in tomorrow's release (or yesterday's) is that this project has only one developer (who also handles support, email, forums, etc.) and he has a large backlog of things that needed done last year.

Understood.  Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Kostya, this can really be easy to implement as a first order approximation. Forget about full conversation or full throttle "threading" for now. Just add a view to group messages with the same subject together -- that would satisfy 90% of the users.

Plus, I think it will increase your sales to a much better extent than stuff like swipe to delete and other fluff.

Note, they need to be *grouped* by subject, not sorted by such. I know this is how the iPhone does it because I often see completely different threads under the same grouping if they share the same subject line.

Someone said the stock Android client has this feature. I think that is in error.

100% agree.
I will buy AM as soon as it supports threading.
No need for swipe to delete or coloring here.

To be honest, I consider swiping as nice to have too, while threading really is the thing I miss most. But really, this App is great as it is and I can patiently wait for the day you add threading.

BTW, the second most missed item for me is configurable notifications, i.e. not to be notified for particular senders and maybe custom notification for others ;-)

I'd agree.  While full threading (as on Apple Mail or Outlook) is really nice on the desktop, on the phone the main goal is to just triage thru email, delete what's unimportant and respond to what's critical.  But not really to fully manage your email.

Threading / conversation view is annoying for me which is something i hate, but if you do add this feature i would suggest having it de-activated as standard so people can activate it if they want.

Me personally if you forced conversation view on me like the gmail app for android i just wont use it and will uninstall it.

But if you get alot more $'s i would not blame you for it you have done alot of hard work !, just please at least let us non conversation users disable the option :)

Threaded messages / conversation should be optional. This is a nice to have feature only, hard to use by so many users...
