Notifications on old messages
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:53:29 am »
First of all, let me say I really do like Aqua Mail. So much so that I purchased the pro version.

My problem is simple. I have new message notifications enabled. When I receive an email in either of my two accounts, the notification shows up, etc. I can go to the inbox and read the messages, delete as necessary, etc. When I do that and return to the home screen of my Samsung S3, I get another notification, telling me I have more new messages, which are the same messages that remain in the inbox after I am finished. I should note that I do not mark them read on the phone, but wait until I am on Thunderbird on my home computer. Throughout the day, I will continually receive notification of those same messages, even though they are not new.

I am not complaining, but I am to the point that I am about to disable notifications completely. Surely, there is a way to stop this from happening.

Let me reiterate what I am having trouble with. I only want a message notification when I receive a new message. As it stands now, I am notified time after time, even though I clear the notification. I am also notified when I delete a message on my home computer, even though I have the option disabled.

I see. My app's notifications are built around the total number of unread messages, so I can see how this can happen sometimes.

When the unread number changes, the app has to update its notification(s) to reflect the new state. Gmail works the same way.

However, with the default settings, there should be no repeat sound (even if you have a sound selected).

The default settings are: Play sound only once (on), Only when new messages (on), Only when there are changes (on). Can you try checking those settings -- these are global app settings under Notifications.

All of the settings you mentioned are checked, both under Global and Special Settings for both accounts.

I just went through one of my accounts and deleted a couple of messages, leaving a few unread messages in the inbox. Aqua Mail just gave me a LED notification, as well as in the taskbar of my phone. The sound didn't play because I have it set to play only once.

Do you have a suggestion for a work around?

Hi Kostya,  I have the same problem.  It is driving me insane.  Please consider implementing a way to suppress repeat status bar notification of unred messages.

Спасибо,
Саша

@LD - let's see, there was no sound, but the notification had to be updated to reflect the new unread count. There being no sound is right, since there were no new unread messages. Am I missing something?

@Sasha - what are your settings? Can you check vs. what I described in this thread? (these are the defaults, btw)

I think I might be having the same "issue": depending on the exact settings, AquaMail will re-show a notification whenever the number of read/unread messages in the mailbox changes. This includes cases in which I mark a message as "read" on my desktop.

A possible approach would be to store a list of all unread messages and only present the user with a notification if new items are added to this list. So:
 - no notification if a message is removed from the list of unread messages.
 - no notification if a message is added to the mailbox that is already marked "read".

Might this be a possibility?

Yes, this is something I'd like to implement.... Not in the upcoming release, but at some point after.

I just want to point out that when the number of unread changes, the notification really does need to be updated. With the default settings, there will be no sound when this happens though (even if you have a sound selected).

I've got a somewhat similar problem, as well as MANY duplicate notifications showing at exactly the same time.

I just installed Aqua Mail for the first time last night on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 as a replacement for the Gmail app and to test it before installing on my Galaxy Note 2.

When I get a notification for new mail, instead of showing just the one new email I received in the notifications dropdown, Aqua Mail shows a whole bunch of old email.  Most of the time, there are at least 2 notifications displayed of the exact same email message but sometimes as many as 4.

I've never had this problem with any other email client in the last 3 years on any of my devices.  I love the features and look of Aqua Mail, but getting duplicate, triplicate, and/or quadruple notifications of the EXACT same email showing in the notifications dropdown is ridiculous.

I've tried without luck to TWICE edit my previous post and had to retype each time because apparently, editing of posts is not allowed- makes no sense as every other forum I've belonged to over the last 15+ years allow editing.

Anyway, here's what I typed up TWICE already, in a nutshell:

I'm not sure why the notifications need updated and displayed every single time the state of the email on the server changes- no other email app does this (I've run several email apps sometimes on the same account and never had this issue in the last 3 years).  The way it should work is ONLY show the user a notification IF and ONLY IF a new email is received, NOT every single time something changes- makes no sense at all the way it works now.  When I open my Gmail app and delete a message, Aqua Mail gives me ANOTHER notification even though I never even received a new email- completely ridiculous and redundant.

I won't be using this app for any of my email until this is taken care of.

Hello,

I can see your edits in both messages.

Yes, my app's notifications are centered around all unread mail.

Recent development builds (posted in their own section on the forum here) handle this case more gracefully:

"When I open my Gmail app and delete a message, Aqua Mail gives me ANOTHER notification"

PS - and let's try to avoid language like "completely ridiculous" and "every other forum... 15 years".

Hello,

I can see your edits in both messages.

I can't, from several browsers on a computer and not via Tapatalk, either.  I'm guessing only you can see the edits, but nobody else can.

Here is a screenshot of what I'm talking about.  Sometimes, the exact same email will be shown as many as 4 times instead of twice like in the example below.

I, too, would like to get notifications only when new messages come, and not when I do something on my desktop email client.

Sorting or deleting emails on outlook/thunderbird/gmail/etc. should not get my phone to get excited.

@srcvtec - in case this is a cache related issue, I've restarted php-fpm (and its APC cache).

Multiple items in notifications -- looks like a Gmail account, where you sync All mail in addition to other folders (and have server side rules that add labels, which then at IMAP level looks like distinct unread messages in several folders).

I use a setup similar to yours, but with the following changes:

- My Gmail server side rules have "Skip inbox, archive messages" enabled... so that filtered messages are *moved* not *copied* into the destination label / folder;

- I do not sync [Gmail]/All mail in AquaMail at all, just Incoming (which acts as a catch all for messages that did not match any rules) and the respective target labels / folders used by filtering.
